Choose a configuration for a new pc

Sun Mar 06, 2016 1:39 pm
Hello everybody,

I need advice on buying my next pc. Krita is a formidable software, But my current PC is too old. So, two choices for me for the same price:

1 - Intel Core I5-6500 (Skylake)
- 16 Go ram DDR4
- 1 Graphic card GTX 960

2 - AMD FX 8320E (PaleDriver)
- 16 Go ram DDR3
- 2 Graphic cards GTX 960 in SLI

What Would do you think the best choice in terms of performance for this software ? Advancing the Intel quad core that provides better performance over a single graphics card , or bet on a octal-core from AMD supported two graphics cards in SLI ?
I want to clarify that this is a single screen HD24 Wacom .

Thank you for your answers.

I'm not a krita dev, but I think graphics card is not terribly important for Krita. As I understand it the OpenGL canvas mostly moves and scales textures, something any reasonably powerful card should be able to do smoothly. Most of the actual calculations are done on the CPU; additionally it makes sense to have a sufficient amount of RAM if you work on large images (16G sounds like a good start).

I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.

Hello nuxos,

I am not a Krita developer. Therefore, take my suggestions with a pinch of salt ;)

First off, you didn't mention the operating system of these 2 computers but I suppose it is a Microsoft Windows one...
Judging from the posts on this forum over the last months it looks like buying a new computer with Windows 10 might be a bit dangerours choice now :(
To my view, this is not Krita's fault since the problems usually arise from the updates on the Microsoft's side which often cause issues related to the tablets drivers (Wacom etc).

Another important aspect to take into account is the presence of an SSD on your computer which might speeds up a lot your performances compared to the traditional and less expensive HDD spinnning drive.
But again, it is up to Krita developers to judge on this matter...

This being said, both computers IMHO are great (extremely powerful, that is) !
I would opt for the first one because I have always preferred Intel CPUs and Nvidia graphics cards (compared to AMD hardware...).

Thank you for your answers.

I use a 8.1 Windows because of Wacom drivers, and i already have a SSD to launch it quickly.
What important think is that i can't choose between those 2 configurations regardless to the software. If i wanted to play games, perhaps i choose the SLI solution. But to use the Krita software, i really don't know what is the most important because, on my old PC, when i had problems with krita, the graphic card changed all thinks one the same configuration. On another side i read that CPU is important too, perhaps more...

Now i need to work on geater painting for publications, and i don't want to meet new problems with slow display.
I need a reactive machine to speed paint.

But also, I have to think about the future of the machine and a solution on new architecture may be more interesting .

I really do not know what to do...

Definitely go for the Intel CPU. There are problems with the vectorization extensions as implemented by AMD which are reported to cause problems with Krita. Also, the more cores, the merrier.
