I can't recall where I read it but I thought I saw that 3.0 was going to have the ability to export an animation in krita as a gif (in addition to the image sequence). I don't see that feature in the latest alpha. Since krita 3.0 is now feature locked does this mean the export to gif will be coming to 3.1 (I assume with the lazy brush)?
(I wasn't sure where to post this, my apologies if this is the wrong section) |

Yes, we hope to get it in 3.1. The problem with gif export is.. well it's gif export. We initially wanted to do it natively and write our own code, but Krita isn't made for indexing and gif NEEDS indexing. So this is something we'd like to spend some dedicated time on while still releasing Krita 3.0 timely.

Thanks Thera. You're right, I didn't think about the fact gif uses indexing, sorry about that.
I know you initially wanted to write your own but how would you feel about using an external tool like ffmpeg, imagemagick, or gifsicle? Depending on what software you chose, you could have presets or allow the user to pick an option. Just a thought. Something like ffmpeg could allow you to output to other formats too. |

APNG has similar issues(mostly one where we need an extra library on top of libpng due apng being unofficial), and we're in feature freeze now so no matter what, this type of export is going to have to wait for 3.1.

Well, I don't mind wait. As for APNG support, you could use Mozilla's libpng fork that contains APNG support instead of "regular" libpng.
