Condensing the Layers menu Discussion

Thu Aug 04, 2016 12:10 am
This is a brainstorming discussion about consolidating the Layer main menu items.

Layers are an exciting feature in Krita. There are so many ways to work with them that the amount of actions is overwhelming. This is starting to show in the Layers menu and how long it is getting..and it is continuing to grow. My concern is that the menu can be difficult to read when the whole screen has commands that go down to the bottom of your monitor.

We occasionally group similar actions together to condense space and make it easier to use. I think we need to do that. Here are some ideas that I am thinking.

1. Move Convert layer color space into the "Convert" menu
2. Group the following menu items into a new "Split" menu. These actions all break apart the layer into more layers
* Split Alpha
* Split Layer
* Wavelet Decompose (patch being worked on now)
* Clones Array

3. Group the following menu items int a new "Transform" menu.
* Rotate
* Scale Layer to new Size
* Mirror Layer Vertically
* Mirror Layer Horizontally
* Shear Layer
* Offset Layer

4. Group the following menu items into a new "Group" menu
* Quick Group
* Quick Clipping Group
* Quick Ungroup

Are any of these good, bad, or something else I might be missing?

Personally, I would also like to move layer styles and g'mic into a layers/effects submenu.

Hi Scott,

thank you for the initiative for re arranging the layer menu.

The groupings that you have made are very good and apt.

I would suggest making these groups in the layer context menu too, that will make it shorter too,
for example the quick group and group actions can be added in a sub-group.

Also grouping similar actions won't affect intermediate and expert users, who rely on the shortcuts.

P.S. Can there be a clone layer action in the layer menu.

All actions -- i.e. everything that is in the shortcuts list -- can be in a menubar menu or submenu. If you can figure out the internal name, then you can easily experiment by creating a custom krita.xmlgui file, adding stuff, moving stuff, deleting stuff. The menu in the layer docker is different, though.

I re-organized the Layer main menu options and layer context menu a bit. It is in master.

@raghukamath - For the clone layer, is it very needed? There is already a button at the bottom of the layer docker to do that. I condensed the Grouping for the group options. i also added a "Add" option for the different types of layers. That wasn't very clear before what those exactly did.

@boud - For moving G'MIC to the layers main menu...It was there a while ago. Deevad had a request to move it to the filters area which is why it was originally moved. We might want his feedback on that. I think most filters affect only one layer, so I could see it go in either place.
