Hello,
I'm a professional CG artist and I've just tried Krita 3.0.1 and I must say I'm amazed. Congratulations to the team for making such a spectacular leap forward. I just wanted to share my top 10 things that would make Krita as usable as Photoshop for me. - Auto-Select layer by clicking on it in the canvas with the move or transform tool - Custom shortcut for zoom, pan tool, increase/decrease brush angle. Overall, custom shortcuts for everything. - Dragging with the zoom tool should zoom in/out instead of drawing a zoom rectangle. The current Ctrl+MMB does that, but is not very accessible when drawing with tablet. - Brush texture patterns could use more texturing modes (for example color burn, hard mix. This would make brushes signifficantly more interesting) - Shortcut to run a specific macro. Or a "macros" docker would be useful. Minor UI things: - When making a new custom brush tip, "Use color as mask" should be on by default. New users can get confused why their custom brush only paints black. - "Create brush tip from image" is kind of hidden. You may want to add it in the Edit menu (similar to Photoshop's Edit>Define Brush Preset). - The brush editor could be more compact and organized. It currently takes up most of the screen. - Smudge brush is more often used than color smudge. "Color rate" can be 0% by default. - Brush preview instead of icons (this is probably hard to implement, but still would be very useful) |

1. Hold "R" to select a layer by clicking on its content.
Auto-selecting would be faster, but holding "R" is faster than going to the Layers Docker When you release the R key it goes back to the current tool (Move, Tranform, Brush). 2. Shortcuts can be set on [Settings] > [Configure Krita] > [Keyboard Shortcuts] or [Settings] > [Configure Krita] > [Canvas Input Settings]. I am not sure if Brush Angle can have a shortcut assigned, but most of the actions can. 3. Ctrl + Space + Pen Click and Drag. Can be changed on [Settings] > [Configure Krita] > [Canvas Input Settings]. 4. Yes. Would be nice. 5. Not sure about Macros, but python scripting is on the plans for the 3.1 release. Custom toolbars and shortcuts to them should be possible with scripting. I have no idea if this will made to the 3.1 release. I'm sure, giving access to all krita functions through python will be hard, and the team is not really big. I hope for the best. 6. Makes sense. 7. Also makes sense. 8. I have no knowledge to talk about how hard or easy this can be, but 3.0.1 version have quite a few brush settings you can change when you open the Popup Pallet. 9. Each preset has its own default settings. That include "Color Rate" percentage. 10. Personaly, I think icons can show more visual feedback than brush stroke preview. It just depends on who create the preset icon. p.s.: I'm not part of the team. i am just a really happy user. |

Thank you for the reply!
1. This works, but you don't really see on the canvas what you have selected. It would be more intuitive to simply add this to the transform and move tool (for example, clicking outside the transformation box can automatically switch to the clicked layer, so you quickly see on the canvas what you have selected to move/transform next). E.g. the "auto-select / show transform controls" feature in Photoshop's move tool. 2. For "pan mode" and "zoom mode", these don't seem to work. For example, setting Z to zoom mode doesn't turn on the zoom tool. 3. This works, thanks! Z+LMB and H+LMB assigned to relative zoom mode are perfect for me. Still, maybe #2 should be reported as a bug? 10. True, but it's bothersome to make an icon for each of your own brushes. P.S. Canvas input shortcuts don't report conflicts with normal shortcuts and are stored as a different file. From a usability standpoint what do you think about something like Blender's "input settings", which combines everything in one place? |

#2 - Zoom/Pan/Rotate-Mode works only with Key + Mouse Click. But it should, at least, hide the Zoom/Pan/Rotate-Mode when you add a new "Key Combination" shortcut. So I think it should be reported.
Reporting conflicts between the two types of shortcuts is enough to avoid problems, but a centralized shortcut interface and storage would work best, I think. |

There are quite a few points with varying levels of difficulty to do.
The brush editor is a huge UI/UX area that needs a lot of UI work. To start 'unpeeling the onion', I separated out a few areas of the brush editor. You will also have the ability to hide certain parts of the editor with the next version to make it more compact. It still needs a lot of work, but it should be a step in the right direction. There is a big 'stacked brushes' features that that might affect the UI quite a bit for the editor, so I am not doing much more until that is implemented. I also just made the "Use colors as mask" selected by default when creating stamp and clipboard brush tips. That will be in the next version too. That is almost always used, so it would be a good default. For the brush tips more visible and an easier way to create new tips...there is a python plugin currently in the works that exposes resources. I wouldn't be surprised if a brush tip manager/docker would pop up from that and would allow people to manage these. If it ends up not being done, I am sure we will eventually create a better way to access and create brush tips. It is a pretty common request. |
