Using Text Tool in Krita

Wed Feb 01, 2017 3:53 pm
It's not the best thing to work with but the Text Tool has it's ups and downs in Krita. One of my current biggest irks with the Text Tool in Krita which has still been persistent since the time I first started using it when it was way back on version 2.8, and still continued to be somewhat of an issue in current versions (3.1.x). This issue is that when you write something out, or want to write something out what I'd usually like to do as if I were in Photoshop for example, to "Select All" when in Text Tool mode when I do shortcut keys "Ctrl+A". Now expectedly you'd think it would select all the text there right? But it doesn't, instead it selects the entire working canvas instead of selecting just the text itself.

One of the second irks about the Text Tool in Krita is that it has trouble when it comes to formatting text or editing something mid-text field, ie; spelling mistake, or just want to enter something to a new line or delete something out. Krita has issues doing this, pressing Enter in mid-text field doesn't push the text after it into a new line, just does nothing instead. Deleting text out has issue of overwriting characters written after something as if you've had pressed the Insert key which overwrites text, does this when inserting spaces into text a well.

Third irks of Krita with the Text Tool is that when you reach the end of a piece of text you have inserted and you've selected your font style, and size, and go back to inserting more text, the font style and size defaults to DejaVu Sans size 20, and this can be really annoying because you got to go back and change it again once you finished inserting the text you wanted. It usually has issue of selecting the chosen font and size since it doesn't change until you've typed a little at the beginning of typing something with the Text Tool. The expected kind of behaviour I would like to see is you can select your font style and size when the text field is empty and doesn't default to its default font style and size, or if you've changed the size it doesn't adjust the typing bar accordingly to the new size selected and this can sometimes ruin the rendering of the chosen fonts.

I did read somewhere that the devs talked about wanting to do a rework of the Text Tool in Krita, I forget where I read it though, and I do believe I've mentioned this issue to them over Twitter before a couple times, because whenever I want to use Krita and it involves inserting text into something, it makes me less keen to use it at all. I would like to know what kind of rework of the Text Tool Krita devs are hoping to go with and have certain shortcut keys work accordingly with it. I've browsed through the configurations of Krita and I see there is option of configuring Krita to use key binds like that of Photoshop, but they're far from perfect, nor do they perform as intended and quite often need to be re-binded to make them work.

I do like Krita, i really like it a lot, and I recommend it to a lot of people who are looking to try something else, but it's just the littlest things sometimes that can make it awkward or difficult to use at times.

Ah that must of been where I read about that before. But it's still something to wait for unfortunately.

Yeah. Writing code takes time, and unfortunately, there are only so many hours in a week.

One text bug that happens to me is that sometimes formatting in Rich text subwindow doesn't correspond with the result I get on my text layer. Like, today it colored the wrong part of text. I fixed the SVG code manually.
Also imo it would be more convenient if text copied ther prorams would be pasted without formatting.
But overall I really appreciate text tool in Krita 4, using code you can do a lot :)
