Why is the brush UI so convoluted?

Mon Mar 20, 2017 8:50 pm
I've been trying to slowly get comfortable with Krita as a Photoshop user. I understand that Krita is made with artists specifically in mind, whereas Photoshop aims to please all and specialize in nothing.

However, in Photoshop, managing brushes is super simple. Everytime I try to save a brush in Krita, it's a total nightmare to actually add it to a brush group, or delete a brush, or import brush tips, or even capturing a brush tip. Is there a reason why it's so complicated? I don't actually have issues fiddling with brush settings, I just have trouble managing brushes.

Sincere question, not trying to bash or anything!

The brush management and resource system need some usability improvements and fixes. The brush editor will get a few improvements in the next version, but there is some long term work to make both the brush management and resource management better. You are right that adding and removing brushes right now isn't very simple. There is no "Add" brush button. You have to take an existing brush currently, edit it, then save it.

We know there needs to be work done on that. Right now, the developers' plates are full working on upgrading the vector tools, fixing the broken text tools and improving them, and finally adding a Python API. There is work planned later to improve some of what you are discussing.

That is the best answer I can give at this time.

Well, part of the answer is, "because Krita's brush engines are more powerful than what you're used to".

The settings for all the brush engines are pretty straightforward and intuitive, I find. It's creating an empty brush set from scratch, and adding brushes to it, deleting brushes that may have become obsolete after further editing, maybe importing brushes from other brush sets and importing brush tip alphas. This is always a headache whenever I try to set up my brushes in Krita. It doesn't appear to have gotten any better since I first tried it, which was years ago. So I wasn't sure if it was even in the distant horizon as a fix.
