Krita brush system usability survey

Wed Jan 09, 2019 4:30 pm
Hi everyone,

I decided to spend some of my free time in the next couple of months to improve aspects of Krita's functionality. Now, I already have several ideas of what i, as a c++ programmer, can be doing, but to start it off, I also want to hear from the artists' community about their overall experience with toolset(let us start with brushes and brush related things) that Krita already provides.

To do this, i created a special survey with google forms. Your responses will help to identify what parts of Krita are most often used and for what purpose, and where i can invest my time most productively. The survey itself will be open until monday next week.

Of course you can share your thoughts and ideas in this thread as well.

Hi, i'll repost some of my ideas from the survey, because i wanted to create a topic anyway.

I like krita's brush engine, it allowed me to move from photoshop. Still there is some little moments, that i couldn't recreate from my photoshop brush set:

1. More blending modes for patterns.
Same blending modes, as masked brush have.

2. Noise option.
Photoshop has a noise option, which used almost in every traditional-looking brush, it hasn't any options, but its sharpening entire brush and adds a little noise on it. That makes brush look more "live", while krita sharpening is only pixelating the brush tip.

Futures, that are not from photoshop, but I'd like to see them:

1. An option for pattern, to dynamically change size, alongside with brush (not by pressure, just main size), because pattern-brushes created for one canvas resolution, looks completely different in another.

2. Protect texture option.
This future originaly appeared in Clip Studio. Principle is simple, when you doodling around same place with patterned brush, the drawn pattern only change its value (become less transparent fro example), and does not paint over with new samples. (Sure its works only in one stroke.)

That's mostly it about brush engine. Thanks for contributing!
