Antivirus making Krita very unresponsive

I've been using Krita for years, and for as long as I can remember it has been very unresponsive, with some actions taking multiple seconds to complete (such as something as simple as selecting a layer). :'(
A couple of weeks ago I had to format my PC. Naturally I re-downloaded Krita, but this time it felt incredibly snappy. (I didn't know why, it was the exact same version as before)
I then proceeded to download and install a bunch of programs that I need, one of them being an antivirus, the free version of Bitdefender to be specific (Don't know if the problem is exclusive to this one, I did not test other ones).
Today I opened Krita again and to my dismay, it was incredibly unresponsive again. I had no idea why, but I felt like trying something stupid, something like disabling my Antivirus and seeing if that would make a difference.
Turns out, it did.
Krita works like a dream when it's off, and is a pain to use when it's on...

Anyways, I'd like to ask if anyone has experienced anything similar, I tried googling about it multiple times but it seemed like I was the only one with that problem, and I was clueless.
At least now I know the cause, and I wonder if that is a problem with the antivirus or Krita and if hopefully there is a workaround somehow. (I tried adding Krita to the exclusions for example, it did not work) :-\

Do not, don't ever, do never run any antivirus application other than what comes with Windows 10, and don't run older versions of Windows than Windows 10, if you feel you need to run Windows instead of Linux.

Those piles of snake-oil drenched dog poo don't give you any extra security and all they do is mess with your system. Remove them, tell your friends and family to remove them and only if you really deeply hate someone, recommend them to install any piece of third-party "security" software for Windows.

All third-party security software messes up your system and the result? They provide extra attack vectors because they dig in parts of your system nothing should be digging.

Yeah, I don't love Windows, but a bunch of the programs that I use either don't work on Linux at all or are a buggy pain to deal with (Krita works like a dream on Linux though), so I'm pretty much stuck with it.
I am indeed using Windows 10 and try to keep it as up to date as I can.
But ok, guess I'm uninstalling the antivirus that is causing me problems.
Thanks for your time and the passionate response. :P

No kidding.
Damn, there is some stuff going on under the hood that I did not know about.
Consider me convinced.
