As anyone involved with Krita has seen, a lot of the chatting around Krita happens on IRC. Trouble is that many potential users hang around blogs and forums and don't normally run an IRC client. With all the positive feedback from Boud's "Last Week in Krita" posts though, we're getting more traffic (ie potential users and contributors) to Krita.org.

So what about if we added a simple, live IRC box, showing #krita, on kde.org? I'm thinking something that just lets people see messages and, if they wish, put in a nick, and post from the site. I'm thinking something like a smaller version of http://orbited.org/wiki/LiveHelp .Ideally it would show messages *before* putting in a nick, and not prompt like Orbited on closing the window, but I think it could help bring more people into the community.

What do you think?
Do you know any script that could work well?

Criteria are that it:
  • Doesn't need the user to install any uncommon software
  • Doesn't need an embedded applet that needs permission to run
  • Is fairly lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • Can be limited to just #krita
  • Can connect to Freenode (Mibbit seems out)

I like the idea a lot, but I think it would be nicer to have a second channel (maybe #krita-help?) so the website doesn't get polluted with all the off-topic banter about food and language advocacy that sometimes happens in #krita. And it would be a good idea to warn people about the CET vs PST thing :-).

Or maybe the banter is a nice feature on the website as well :-)

Maybe #krita-help would not be bad. Sometimes we spent time with some krita-hackers social conversations about favorite color of pyjamas etc. so maybe people would not get it.

And the eye of random website user may stop this. I would go for #krita-users , #krita-help.
