Hi, I know That krita is becoming an app for proffesional sketching and painting and I think that's great, but I'm by no mean a professional.
So if krita is leaving the simple sketching & painting (and also photo editing tools) What app would you recommend for a simple user who just wants to make a simple drawing?. Sorry if this is not the place to ask for another app, but I also wanted to know what you thought about this. I read a phrase in this blog http://www.valdyas.org/fading/index.cgi/hacking/lastweekend.html : "Krita is not going to hold your hand until you've learned enough to graduate to another application" Thats ok but which app will hold my hand until I graduate to krita? PD: I am the one from the brainstorm idea of krita simple replacement, and sorry if I'm ranting a bit too much about it , but I really want an application for this (specially with koffice interface) and as I don't really know a lot about coding, I can't start a krita replacement like the one proposed in my idea : brainstorm.php?mode=idea&i=86293 |

In my experience, Krita's interface is much simpler and straightforward than GIMP's. I don't think Krita's interface is going to become much harder or convoluted, specially because the team is focusing on usability as well.
Therefore, I think that for really, really simple sketching or painting, any application similar to Microsoft Paint in functionality is just enough. I don't intend to be sarcastic, I really think that Krita is simple enough that the only simpler applications you can use are either Paint alternatives (like KolourPaint) or a few commercial applications I've seen with really simplified interface, like Corel Painter Essentials (but with enough work in usability, Krita should look just like that). Just my 2 cents. |

If you want simple just open krita and draw without changing anything. Oh, and don't use Arch
Creating layers, picking colours and erasing are all simple to do. While I love all the other tools, for a simple drawing app, thats all you need. The real complexity is in improving ones ability to draw. That said, there are usability improvements I'd like to see in Krita (ie MMB to pan, regardless of what tool and layer you have selected) and I *have* been looking at using Arch Linux in the last few days. What can I say? I'm a fan of power and flexibility in both my apps and OS. |

Thanks, If krita is also focusing on gui improvements for non-professional people, for example not putting 30 filters with extrange names right in front of my face (gimp does something like that) Then it's ok, but The other problem I have is that there doesn't seem to be plans for fitting on a netbook size screen (you might say I shouldn't use sketching and painting on a netbook but it's my primary machine and my requirements are simple).
And about using arch , I'm by no mean an artist but I like computers and linux and love kiss philosophy of arch. I can understand code and conf files but don't ask me to draw anything more than a circle hehe. |

For such simple needs and such a small screen, what is the reason you're trying to use Krita or the GIMP instead of simpler programs like KolourPaint?.
(on a sidenote, Krita actually fits on a netbook screen, if you close the layer selector and other huge dockable toolboxes). |

Because my simple needs include layer support, something I would do is draw something with a few brushes and a degrade and add a few images to that move them, resize them, etc. And this is difficult to do in kolourpaint (please tell me if there is some way of using something like layers in kolourpaint).

What screen resolution are you on? Just by moving a couple of interface elements, Krita works rather nicely on my laptop with 800x600:

MyPaint might be an alternative for you. It's very simple, has layers and fits on a netbook screen.
For photos digikam might be an alternative. |

@kubuntiac : I have a 1024 x 600 screen but the brush options dialog does no fit here.
@slangkamp: I'll try mypaint and see how it goes but it would be nice to have a koffice/kde program. |

I'm confused... By "brush options" I assume you mean the "Configure Presets" popup next to the painttop selector (the dropdown at the top of the screen). Here's what my 1024x768 screenshot looks like (scaled to 700px wide for the forums): Original Fullsize Image: http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/2203/1024x768.png Yes, it's 168 pixels higher than your screen, but there's 285 pixels of spare height... Have I misunderstood you? Can you show a current screenshot of what you mean? |

Sorry for the misunderstanding but I have krita 2.1.1 and the dialog is different and has the brush preview down instead of right so it doesn't fit vertically, and the first time I open it it doesn't fit horizontally (after that it moves to the left and fits ok).
I' guess this is fixed on beta 1 PD: I realized just now that it's only the first time. |

The look the screenshot from Kubuntiac showed how it will look in beta 2.
