Brush engines thesis and references

Fri Apr 09, 2010 3:58 pm
Hi Krita aware artists,

I would like to ask you to test also my funny brush engines and produce some artworks. Sometimes I don't know how usable they are
but David proved me that hairy brush can be useful with the beautiful tiger artwork.

So far I got response from two artists who use Krita, enkithan and n-pigeon.
They produced very nice artworks already here in Gallery or on Krita.org page. I'm very thankful to them. enkithan is also very great mate who inspires me to improve the workflow. Now I want to invite also you ;)

So far I watch experimentation thread of Deevad, he is doing amazing work.

My brush engines for thesis are:
* Deform brush : deforms image (move, swirl, etc) , e.g. enkithan produced Van goghish image
http://enkithan.free.fr/web/koffice/ima ... ghish.jpeg

* Hairy Brush: I already have nice demonstration in tiger demonstration, enkithan's girl but I'm still open, just in case last blogpost http://lukast.mediablog.sk/log/?p=248

* Particle Brush: Work-in-progress, but I saw some nice demo by n-pigeon for trying to use it for hairs, so far it lacks some usability

* Softbrush: slightly different concept then default Pixel brush , you setup the softness with curve instead of vertical/horizontal fade in Pixel brush, also density feature is there, aimed to be able to create charcoal/crayon/chalk/ feeling.

I did this with it

Here are some docs done as blogpost:

* Spray brush: just splatter, n-pigeon made very nice watercolor simulation with it

Some related blogposts:

If you find some time and you can use those brush engines, I would be more than very happy to have some artwork which demonstrate their possibilities.
Also I'm very open to any suggestions from you regarding the brushes - what do you miss, or what is hard to understand or use.

So far I'm aware of one thing for speed painting - I use old sliders there and not the "new krita shiny slider" but I can fix that if you are interested :)

My deadline is end of the April. Please, if you want to make Krita developer happy, take some of my brush engines, create artwork with pleasing CC license and conntact me with your suggestions. E-mail/IRC/PM - I accept everything.

Last note:
There are some other brushes I wrote like Grid brush (http://lukast.mediablog.sk/log/?p=113), Chalk and Curve, but that was just playing and toying with ideas and I don't plan to
include them in thesis text.

Hi Lukas,

It will be a pleasure if I can contribute to your thesis. Thanks to link in your post to all this demo pages, I will try to use it and create speed-painting using them. I will post them in my Gallery day after day and I will write the setting I used for it.
