Order of the brush engines

Fri Oct 01, 2010 10:31 am
Hello artists,

there are brush engines that have experimental nature in them. So we added category to the box where you select your brush engines.

I would like to ask you for some advice how to sort them. See below

Brief explain of the experimental category:
Experimental nature means that the rendering of the brush engine might change or that the preset format is not yet stable enough and might change in that way we can't make it compatible with the preset from previous versions (e.g. in some cases it will be hard to map 2.3 preset of spray to 2.4 preset format). We will try hard to make also the experimental presets compatible, but sometimes it will be impossible with current Krita architecture.

Here is help needed:
Image
Current state of trunk on the picture ^^ ignore the Experimental one, it's hidden in my tree o) and also Chalk will be disabled -- there is preset installed that does what chalk does in Pixel brush+bonus it is faster chalk :o

What is your preference of the order of the brush engines?
I don't have plans to make it user configurable, I would like to find some consensus with you, artists?

My developer opinion:
------------
Stable
------------
Pixel brush
Smudge
Hairy
Duplicate
Filter
------------
Experimental
------------
Spray
Deform
Sketch
rest by alphabet 8)

My advice for the brush order is:

------------
Stable
------------
Pixel brush
Hairy
Hatching
Smudge
Filter
Duplicate
------------
Experimental
------------
All by alphabet
(or it's ok also if Spray-Sketch-Deform were first and then rest by alphabet as you suggested)

Finally I've an official list of the "dangerous" engines! I lost all my customized brushes with the various upgrades. ;D

Very rational order for me. I approve your suggestion. ;)

Did you lose any of your settings for the brushes that are marked "stable" ? That would be a bug... so if you did, it would be nice if you could give us samples so that we figure out what is wrong.

Ok, these presets, under the pixel and smudge category, don't use predefined brush tip anymore and now they're completely flat: http://www.mediafire.com/file/rj07f219k ... orking.zip
If you could get back the "scratch brush", I'll be very grateful. :)

Good bug hunting!

I'd like to agree with everyone above that your "Developer Opinion" order looks good to me. I probably would have moved sketch up above deform, but that's a pretty minor difference to me.
