Re: Krita for Windows? When?

The calligra 2.6 RC3 download in http://www.kogmbh.com/download.html has a new build; I'm still fixing my build systems, but it's slow going. Probably because I'm trying to do a bunch builds at the same time:

mingw + master
mingw + 2.6
msvc + master
msvc + 2.6
msvc for krita sketch

So I'm confusing myself all the time... Today I really have to finish the new sketch build, though.

Indeed Good news about the new Calligra Package.
Keep it slow,no need to take stress .It doesn't matter if its late to get Krita 2.6 and next Krita Sketch versions hands on. :)
The ultimate aim of Krita team is quality.I know how difficult is to code,as difficult as inventing a Gravity engine.

With all respect to other programs - I am using and I am only interested in Krita. I rather wait patiently on some Krita only installer that boudewijn is so heroically fighting with - against all odds and windows difficulties ;)
Good luck and please let us know when something new will pop out.

Hi nezumi,

Is "build" a different version from regular versions?

Ank is asking for 2.7 alpha.

I am asking this question because I doubt that Builds and regular versions are two different versions (unaware of this).
Please everybody dont think that I am creating confussion in the thread by questioning this.I mentioned about the release of the new regular version because Boudewijn suggested in one of my threads that 2.6 would approximately come somewhere on January and on based on that I made estimation.I considered 2.6 as build.I need to clear my confussion.

Every version is a build technically. The difference may be if the build is made as a official release or it is just version meant for testing purposes. Nearest official release of Krita will be with number 2.6, and that will be one build, but there is already work being done on next version 2.7 and that would be another build for testing purposes because it isnt official, final release yet. I guess word "build" is very close to "version". I am however illustrator and designer, not programmer so I may not be absolutely correct on it.

A build is usually something that got compiled and made public with certain compilers and/or switches. Like Boud said earlier, he is preparing several builds, namely some with the mingw compiler, some with msvc. Those are then separated into different versions.
So a build is basically something that got prepared for you.
A Release is not necessarily been build, but a certain point in the development process where you assign a version number. This could as well consist of the plain source files that would need to be compiled by yourself.
Not in this case though, as it seems, as builds based on the new versions are prepared.

Additionally, an RC (release candidate) is something that is meant to be like the final version, but is shipped for testing, to verify its stability. It has all functions that are supposed to be there and it looks like it should. It might still have some hidden issues that need to be fixed before the real final release.

The simple way I look at it:
- Krita 2.6 = the product version about to be shipped out.
- Krita 2.7 = prototype version = work in progress.

A build = when they put together an actual product you can (try to) use, whether it's been tested or not.

If you take the example of a car, when the engineers are designing it, they have blueprints and they have bits of tires and engines lying around. Krita 2.6 would be the car for which they've finished design, testing and adjusting all the parts, so they can "build" it and let everyone use it. They can build a Krita 2.7 car too, but because some parts haven't been finished or thoroughly tested yet, this "build" may crash and generate a lot of customer complaints. It may not be usable at all.

Release candidates are when they make builds that are supposed to be okay for mass-market, but they do final tests and fixes before releasing it to the public. There are also additional phases during a development cycle, though it seems to vary from project to project. Most projects have a concept of "feature freeze", for example, which is when no new features can be added anymore, and they focus on making sure everything is working properly. If you take the example of a car, the designers can't change the whole outer shape or change the entire engine system at the last minute. This is why, when you're reading about new features being developed, they are usually not included in the very-soon-to-come-out version (Krita 2.6 in this case), but in the Next version (Krita 2.7): because Krita 2.6 is already on feature freeze. Adding more features now would force the team to start the testing and stabilizing process all over again, delaying the whole release.

The above is probably not entirely accurate, but that's how I look at it. :)

Hello!

First of all, I want to thank Krita crew for making such awesome graphics application.

While there are some small things that I miss (nothing truly spectacular), they are far outnumbered by great parts. I've tried several other programs (both free and commercial) and by far Yours (and Inkscape, as free "Illustrator", it's rad as hell) is one that I will use.

I have some compability issues on my both Windows-running computers, especially with tablet (XP desktop and Vista laptop, using Kanvus Artist 127) but I will fill detailed bug report later on.

Anyway, great job.

Although I installed Linux now just to have always fresh Krita I am still interested in using it under Windows. Are there any news about Windows version? This thread became very silent lately.

We're struggling with the wacom support on Windows. There is a bunch of Qt bugs we need to work around, and the solution is not obvious.

Dmitry has found a fix for the tablet problems. I have made a new installer. Please test it -- if it's good enough, I'll announce it on the download page.

http://heap.kogmbh.net/boud/krita_2.6.8.6.msi

(it's git master as of yesterday; I'll also do a 2.6 package later on, with the fixes included.)
