Krita System Specs

Wed Nov 23, 2011 6:48 am
Hi, long time since my last post, i tried the latest builds from Krita 2.4, while i notice most of Krita is really improving, i find my PC slowing down too much and Krita using an average memory of 200 megas with a new blank project, my question is what are the recommended specifications for my system so i can have a good experience? i have the impression that i'll be no longer able to use it as good as i did with Krita 2.3, also i want to know if is it me, or most of the software made in qt is a heavy memory consumer? great works so far guys, greetings!

Well, Krita can make use of any memory and cores you may have, so the beefier the system is, the better. I develop and use Krita on my dual-core laptop with 4gb of ram, others still use 2gb of ram and a single-core system. That's probably the real minimum.

Krita shouldn't be using more memory for an image than 2.3, but opening Krita with an empty image will use more memory because we're now loading a larger set of patters, brushes and presets. Of course, measuring memory consumption on Linux is a bit of a dark art, but we are trying to find ways to reduce our memory usage without also impacting performance.

how is that? this is new for me really, i always thought that an empty project would use less memory as nothing is being done, then the more i do in a new project, the less will use in terms of memory? how can i avoid loading that large set of patterns and presets if i'm not using them all? thanks your for answering =)!

You can always remove all the patterns and so by going to the krita installation directory and deleting them. You might need to be root for that. The total set of patterns, presets and brushes in Krita now uses about 100mb of memory.

yup, what i did was cut/paste them in a backup directory, that made the trick, thank you =)
