Krita Icon and Mascot Idea

Wed Dec 26, 2012 3:27 am
I've designed an icon for Krita and I think it can be considered as a mascot idea too. The idea is simply a squirrel with paint on its tail, as previously discussed in the community, but the color scheme I choose was the "KDE blues". This file is transparent PNG, I've exported as icons of 32px/48px/64px. The original size is almost 2000px, you may download it from the link below.

In May 2012 I made a character for Krita too, but it's too anime styled for a mascot so I didn't released it then. Today I decided to post the character here as well. She can be considered as the anthropomorphic version of the icon one. This picture is not completely finished yet, because I'm still planning for a background. It has very high original resolution, I'll upload it if requested.

Both pictures are dedicated to Krita, its developers and community. Licensed under GPLv2+ or CC-BY-SA 3.0. Hope you guys like them. I'm also trying to participate in the revamping of KDE mascot. I like drawing animal mascot stuff A LOT, probably because I can use odd colors in the design of an animal. Have a nice holiday!

Aww, that is SO incredibly cute! I really like your choice of a squirrel, too! I like the idea of paint on its tail!

The only pity is that the blue color makes it look more like water droplets than paint. Would it be possible to vary the colors a bit on the tail to make it look more like a paintbrush with multiple paint colors on it?

It looks awesome though, and so does the mascot drawing! :D

Thank you for replying! At first I was thinking of using rainbow color paints too, but I wanted to go with the "KDE blue" color scheme. I made some tiny adjustment to its tail after I read your comment so it looks more like a brush now.

Cool sketch and just awesome!
However,my idea of Krita Icon would be something depicting product designs with respect to Anthropometry and comics.People use Sketchbook Pro for car designs or product designs. However,Krita too can be used, more efficiently for the same.I have designed an Icon with theme of Krita being used for Product designs as well as comics.
you can seee it on
http://www.flickr.com/photos/59145126@N07/8309293837/sizes/s/in/photostream/

I know its pretty wired design which you may not like, but I would like to see a logo which would depict usefulness of krita in both product designs and comics. We may design a proper logo based on same theme.
If you like,I would post this in competition arranged by Krita community for new logo and mascot. Please post Webpage link for registration for participants.

A product design or car design needs shading effects, selection tools,Feathering tools, good real life like strokes, etc.
Krita 2.6 will have all these with improved selection tools on cards as planned. All needs are incorporated in Krita which has to be reflected in its new logo.
Krita has allmost everything what creation of comics need and the new logo itself illustrates this.

It's fine to make a competition so we can have more ideas!

I wonder when you talk about "logo", do you actually mean "splash screen"? The icon I post here is what you click to start a program, like those of Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. In most environment, an icon is about 32px ~ 64px square in size. In such a small place, not much detail can be included. In my design, I just wanted to show clearly with a 32px square icon that Krita is a digital painting tool with a natural brush system, and it is a KDE program.

Of course I can draw a splash screen too, which I had already been planning for a while.

digital painting tool with a natural brush system

Ya,good point, this should be also reflected, but the strokes with size variations according to pressure in my logo already reflects this to a some extent, not completely though.
I am a newbie young car designer & Inventor and unfortunately not painter or comic designer.I use Krita for designing wonderful cars.So its obvious that it will be difficult for me to illustrate all the natural painting effects with respect to Painting and comics, but its easy for me to illustrate all natural effects needed in designing cars or designing products.
Perhaps,I can add shading effects in the Krita logo.
Shading effects is one of the most important aspects of car designing or product designing.

The technique used by car designers and even product designers to give shading effects is to make a new lasso selection layer and use light airbrushing on it or use feathering method.
This is what should be added to logo to illustrate Krita's capability in natural appearance of product or car designs.

Perhaps incorporating shading effects would give this logo a very unique texture.

Splash screen?
Never thought of it.What does it mean?

I understood that the logo should be small enough. This should be considered so that low resolution maintains the logo clarity.
Let me see if We can come out with better ideas.

I'm still not sure about the icon -- but I would definitely like to use the mascot image to introduce Krita 2.6, one way or another!

Congratulations on the release of Krita 2.6, I like the actual icon for 2.6, looks cool and professional at the same time. And thank you very much for picking the character drawing here as the cover of the booklet. It was really an honor.

Now I'm working on another picture of the mascot character and another set of concept art which looks less anime and more animal-like, similar to those I did for KDE's mascot here viewtopic.php?f=254&t=109758.

(P.S. Sorry about replying late, because the one-month-length Chinese New Year here had been very busy, and I totally forgot about this thread ^^b)
