Hi guys!

First of all congratulations on the great 2.4 release,
for some time now I've been installing new versions of Krita but up until
now I didn't quite like it and consider it usable.
With this version though I'm truly amazed, the brushes work really well quick and smooth, pen pressure just works as it should, I remember hoping that maybe
someone implements Al.chemy tools to another (non-java based) software and there they are along with brushes from harmony.
I used GIMP back in around 2004 or so but as I got more into serious stuff the lack of layer groups and adjustment layers and several other seemingly minor features just made it impossible for me to use it.
Now layer groups are implemented but with that pace of development is just horrible.


The only thing I don't like about Krita is the default UI appearance and here's my question.
Is there a way to change the theme and the icons under Windows?
I tried to replace the default oxygen icon with some custom KDE icon themes
but after running Krita it reconfigures itself back to the default.

Well... No, not really. The windows installer for Krita comes with its own dedicated set of KDE libraries, and we hard-code the Vista theme (to avoid the Win95 theme). Krita 2.5 will allow you to set the colors independently, and you could test that if you use the krita-only installer. As for different icon sets -- we only ship oxygen, I'm afraid.

Making Krita more themable would take serious effort, and I'd rather spend that on fixing the windows-specific bugs...

I think that whereas natively on KDE it looks and feels ok on Windows it really stands out and looks bad.
"Themability" isn't really needed.
Maybe just change the default theme and add a dark one and better icons?
I hope you don't ignore it, people are visual and especially people who are interested in graphics imho.
Finally typical Windows users that stumble upon Krita, they'run it and it looks unfamiliar and kinda distracting they'll just uninstall it and get back to PS.

For color theming, yes -- that's provided. The krita-only msi actually should have that already, in settings/theme, where you can select between light and dark themes. For color theme creation, we might have to package one or two extra libraries.

Note: I didn't test that yet...

And well, you have to keep in mind that there's exactly nobody working on Krita on Windows. I take a Saturday morning now and then to fix some windows-specific bugs, but that's it. There isn't funding and there aren't volunteers to help out on Windows.

We're sort of making plans to figure out how to get the funding, but until then, krita on windows will always be Extraordinarily Experimental .

I'm using "Unstable Krita" from KO GMbH, there's
Settings - Themes and there's just "default" and configuration.
After clicking configuration there's an error "Cannot start Colors Settings panel from KDE Control Center".

Ah! Then we need to package some more stuff. That's not going to take too much time. Color theming should be ready for the next version of the krita-only installer since it's only adding some stuff we didn't package but did build to the packages.

Heh. Cultural differences showed their faces here. When I first skimmed that blog post I thought it said the Calligra installer had been downloaded 15 times, not 15,000 (because most English speaking countries use a comma to delimit thousands). I only realized after seeing the number posted elsewhere. The first read through I thought you put .000 just to emphasize how *few* downloads there had been! (Like fiften, and not one tenth of a download more...)
