Stroke Smoothness

Thu May 16, 2013 12:53 pm
Hi there,

I'm evaluating Krita as a potential substite for my aging copy of Painter, and one of the first things I noticed is that my linework looks like it was drawn by an invalid:

I tend to sketch quite rapidly, and the faster you go the clunkier the line gets. I've fiddled with a few settings but can't seem to find a solution. Is this a known issue or is it something at my end? I'm using Windows XP and a Wacom by the way.

Thanks for any help!

Chris

I got this too with on ubuntu 13.04 and repo of Dmitry Kazakov. I worked ok around 2 weeks ago. Now brushes seems to work faster, but lines are not fluid. Brushes work good in 'edit brush settings' dialog. Maybe it has something to do with infinite canvas...

Same problem in "Edit Brush Settings" here.

I'm reading good things about this software and I really want to like it, but this is such a fundamental issue that I can't believe it's gone unnoticed (except by the two of us). If it's abnormal behaviour, or it's a known issue that's being addressed, it would be great to know either way before I invest any more time into learning it.

Thanks,

Hi Chris,

Krita supports two kinds of canvas: cpu-based and hardware accelerated through opengl. On Windows, until now only the cpu canvas is available and that is liable to be slow, depending on os version, hardware, other things running. The good news is that I managed to make the opengl canvas work on windows this weekend, and after I've fixed some other annoyances, I'll be making new test packages.

However, I cannot test on XP since I only have Win7 and Win8 here -- which means I cannot verify whether XP has new enough OpenGL drivers.

That is good to hear, thanks boudewijn. I seem to recall Painter 12 is somewhat slower in XP, so a Windows upgrade will be inevitable either way. It'd definitely be a bonus if the OpenGL canvas works in XP though.

I've just been playing with 2.7.8.6 and the brushes are nice and fluid now, regardless of whether OpenGL is enabled or not*. Excellent work! Since this was my main hangup, the pros are now outweighing the cons and I'll most likely be retiring Painter after 17 years of service and supplanting it with Krita (once I've fully sussed out its stability weak spots).

Many thanks!

*Generally not enabled because it's giving me some trouble, but I'll post about that in another thread.
