question on filters

Sun Feb 02, 2014 3:29 am
Brand new to krita and wondered about several things
First is about importing photoshop filters into krita, yes, no or what file format to work with, maybe?
The other thing is how do I import or place an image on a layer. Say I have 2 images that I want to overly on 2 different layers. I can open one then create a second layer but how do I place the second image on the second layer.
Very cool program, hope to learn it soon

You should be able to find the 'import-layer' option in the layers menu.

Importing filters from other programs isn't possible right now, and may not be possible ever: The code for filters can be different per program. However, Krita 2.8 has g'mic implemented, which is a large collection of filters that can be interused between programs. While photoshop is not part of these programs, the filter you are looking for might be implemented in g'mic.

What filter are you missing?

Thanks,I'd like as wide a range of filter as possible for raster images.
Do I copy or import the g'mic filters into a Krita folder, from where?
Like I mentioned I'm green as a newborn krita :)

No, you need a newer version of Krita, like the 2.8 betas.
Then... it's mentioned somewhere as "g'mic operation". Click that, and then a window with all g'mic filters will pop up.

Hello wynpotter,

G'MIC filters (a.k.a actions with Krita) [1] are only available for the Linux version of Krita (version 2.8 beta).
As a consequence, as of today, you can not try them on Windows with Krita 2.8 beta-2 :)

They are somewhat available on-line (actually, only a short amount of them):
https://gmicol.greyc.fr/

In addition, on Windows (and Linux) you can get all of them (there are more than 500 right now to test...) already installed with Gimp 2.8.10 [2] for free.
Needless to say, this last solution is quite different from your question (and does not pertain to this forum either...) ;D

Best regards,

Or just drag and drop your image to the canvas and select "Insert as New Layer" in the popup menu.

I also have GIMP but have not used it very much as I also have PSCS2.
One of the members of the Corel Painter forum I'm on, mentioned how much they like KRITA. I have painter 12 and think KRITA will be a good alt when needed
Thanks for the help, I'll learn from what's available now and go from there. Maybe someone will write a filter engine like filter factory for KRITA sometime in the future.
There's a lot to learn on new software so I'll stick to the basics and get that nail down.
Thanks again Wyndham
