Unusually High Memory Usage

Tue Apr 15, 2014 12:31 am
Hi, everyone! I'm a digital art hobbyist that's new to Krita, (Been using GIMP for the past two years.) and I'm really loving the software a lot after upgrading to version 2.8 on Ubuntu! I want to use it almost exclusively now, because it's so perfect for my tablet, but I'm having a problem with it.

I've tried cutting down the Undo stack to 10, and working with 72ppi like I do on GIMP, but the program still uses far more memory than GIMP. A simple chibi sketch on a 3000x3000 canvas can slowly use up to 1.3GBs of RAM to itself over time, and my system only has 3GBs to work with.

This would be a non-issue if I had more RAM, but I don't like keeping tabs on a program's memory usage while I draw. It's kind of distracting having to restart Krita every hour to avoid crashing my system; at this rate a complex painting would take up 16GBs of memory. Is there anything I'm overlooking in the options?

Hi

You probably are experimenting this bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331592

The good news is that its been fixed on the soon to be available 2.8.2 release. At the moment the only work around is to close krita every now and then. Another temp solution would be to roll back a few versions. (2.7.9 seems to be free of the bug)

Thanks for letting me know, ghevan! I'm worried I'll break something if I regress to an older version, so I'll be eager for the fix in 2.8.2's release on the PPA.

I'm loving Krita's brush engines and toolset a lot, so it'll be worth the wait.
