Hello.
I'd recently learned about the Shade Selector being used as a sort of color swatch system through one of Ramón Miranda's tutorial videos, which is a pretty spiff tip. I was hoping to set up one of the lines as a saturation adjuster that goes from pure color to neutral grey without changing the hue or value; however, even with the delta set to 0.00, 1.00, 0.00, the value of the color is adjusted along with the saturation. Trying to go to neutral grey also makes the color lighter and vice versa--you can see the marker change on the value scale at the top of the color wheel. Sometimes depending on the color, the saturation won't be affected at all and it just goes straight to white. I wasn't sure if this was a bug or something I'm doing wrong, or maybe I was just ignorant about some inner working that's supposed to behave that way. As an aside, I still get the "Mypaint" style selector when pressing Shift+M even though the minimal selector is set up, and considering the video where I picked up this tip was about setting up on-canvas swatches using this method, I get the feeling this isn't how it's supposed to behave? But this doesn't bother me as much as the former problem. The video in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B161iAVZEzc Sorry about the links. For some reason I get an error if I try to post them with the Img tag: http://i.imgur.com/McVmsrN.png http://i.imgur.com/FjjJAmD.png http://i.imgur.com/ku5j8iT.png Thanks. Loving Krita so far. ^^ I'm an old Mypaint user hoping to learn how to use Krita for more than just image adjustments--although it does a great job of that!--because it's such a lovely program in its own right. |

Ah, well, neither are really bugs.
Rather, the Shade selector uses the HSV-coordinate system, rather than the HSL coordinate system that your current selector uses. In HSV, the saturation and tone of a colour have a significantly different relationship than HSL. For example, in HSV, going from the brightest red to white requires changing the Saturation slider, while in HSL you would use the Lightness slider for that. I briefly cover them here, but the article is mostly about the improvements to the system. I've been making a lot of changes to the advanced colour selector, and this is a change I'm holding off because I'm not sure I can provide the correct UI and flexibility for it.(Because someone might want to mix different coordinate systems). The Mypaint one is not a bug either. The Mypaint shade selector is always on Shift+M, and the Minimal Shade Selector is always on Shift+N ![]() |

Ohhh, oh! Oh! Sure enough! Haha, I'd been mishearing it the whole time. Thank you for clearing this up. ^^
Ahhh, I see now. The behavior makes a lot more sense in this light. Your reluctance is definitely understandable; the feature works well enough for what it is, and I guess it's a pretty tiny convenience compared to the work involved when clicking in the little circle works well enough without changing the value. (I reckon the hue changes a bit, but compared to value is that really a huge deal?) Thank you very much for explaining it! I was so confused when it wasn't doing what I expected, but I just had no clue of how the system worked. Your article cleared things up a lot. Funny, I was on your blog just a little while ago and I'd completely missed it. ^^; By the way, your ink brushes are amazing! I'd been really hurting for some good ink brushes for Krita and yours were spot on exactly what I needed. So thank you very much for that, too. c: |
