Selection from a channels ( alpha ) ?

Hi guys,
A simple question ;
like on Photoshop, can it be possible to create a quick selection using a channels ? ( the alpha channel for example )

There is Select->Select from Color Range which is similar. You can als use the alpha channel with Select->Select opaque

I don't believe that feature exists currently. The closest thing I have used before is the "Similar Color Selection" tool. It is the second from last in the tools on the left. If I am really interested in doing a selection based off layer contents, I usually paint something on a new layer, right click, and select "Select Opaque". That works pretty well too.
