I wanted to know if there is a shortcut or menu item for grouping selected layers.
what I do now is to make a new group and drag all the layers in the group.

Can I select various layers and then group them with menu option or shortcut.

No... We don't have a shortcut for that right now. It wouldn't be hard to create, the tricky thing is to figure out where to insert the new group layer. It would also be good, if we did this, to make sure that if you have multiple layers selected and create a group layer with the layerbox menu, that those selected layers end up in the new group. I guess...

if implemented this will be useful in saving some time while grouping vast number of layers spread across the layer pallete.

we can have the new group stacked above the topmost layer among the selected ones and have the layer order intact for the selected ones inside the group.

menu option is also welcome.

so can i file a wish bug

But currently you can't select multiple layers can you? ?
Or is that disabled in the windows version?

As far as where to put the group once created.

If selected layers are between other layers etc then maybe you could have a "linked group" option where any action on any of these layers in the group affects all in the group. Ex:transforms, filters etc.
But the visually the only link is maybe a coloured group icon /name ?

Just a thought

Multiple selection works in the development builds -- it should work on Windows as well, though I cannot check right now. It wasn't there in 2.8 yet.
