Hello,
Actually I am now working on an animation, with each layer group as a frame and each layer is, a layer in that frame. Therefore, I have something like - 1K - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2K - 2 Currently I can only using Isolate Layer to export each layer in each frame. Is there a quick way of exporing everything out as png? Also, the Animation branch doesn't work for me at all, and the author of that branch does not respond to comments, so I think that is not the way to go. |

The animation branch is actually merged, but is everything but production ready.
If you want to quickly export animation frames, first put your individual frames in groups. Then, in the layers-topmenu, there's an option called 'save group layer', this will save all the groups out as a separate flattened image. |

As long as every frame is in a group, then you can use the save group layers feature to export every group as a png. As for the animation timeline feature, well... I hope we'll get basic funding for that soon, and then we'll do a fund raiser to improve on it and really make it end-user ready!

OK, I found the save group layers... That might ease my work a lot, but not all groups contain all layers since not all animation layers are moving every frame. Speaking of the animation plugin, I am using 2.8.5, so I assume it is not in this version?

Actually are there usable 2D raster animation softwares working on Linux? Even commercial ones are acceptable as long as affordable. Better if well documented. I tried Synfig before but that is vector based, so I can't get used to it yet. Krita animation branch's onion skin is not working for me.

tvpaint is said to work on Linux and is very good. We hope over the next couple of months to fund fixing and finishing the animation module for Krita, too. There's a good chance for investment from an indie film studio, which together with a crowd-funding campaign should give us the resources to really deliver great animation support.

Actually I looked into TVPaint already... Yes, it is very professional, but also costs >$600... Currently I can still live with layers + Libreoffice + Imagemagick + Blender to do some manual organization. Although the problem is that I can't get immediate feedback.

Actually, are there anything I can help? I have C++ skills (Undergraduate level, taken Data Structures...) but I am not sure what documentation to start with. |

If you are using the latest branch and you are using kritaanimation, you can simply export all frames of the animation.
Click at "Save as" or "Export" and choose "*.kranimseq" as file format. It will create a folder named <name>.kranimseq, which contains the frames as a sequence of .png images. Really handy feature. But remember, it only works when using kritaanimation and choosing "animation" as project preset. That means that you have to draw all frames in kritaanimation animation mode, which is a bit difficult in the state of this feature. Still quite a lot of bugs.

But kritaanimation is basically unusable for me... All icons are blank, and Onion skin does nothing. Which means that it is worse than using layers + Manual management. I don't even know who I am reporting the bugs to. |

Which version are you using? I had exactly those problems some time ago in kritaanimation but it seems to be solved for me in the latest git.

The krita PPA, krita-testing. Also, that PPA has its binaries installed in /opt/project-neon/bin, so I cannot just start from my menu... I am on Ubuntu 13.04. Two weeks ago when I was using Gentoo, I just compiled the latest animation branch. |

Krita testing isn't being build for 13.04 anymore. This is because launchpad is really strict about which ubuntu versions to support, and 14.04 is the lowest version that is supported. You should either upgrade, or remove the testing ppa and build yourself.
As for animation coding... The branch you should use is the Multiple Documents branch (called krita-mvc-rempt), as that's were the refactoring is taking place, though currently animation files have been disabled because the main goal is to get Multiple Documents merged into master. But the best thing is if you hop onto IRC and talk to boudewijn there, it'll be easier to detail what needs to be done that way. |
