Hello!

I'm a high school Digital Art teacher and I recently switched to using Krita in my classroom (with WACOM Intuos 5 tablets).

I have an amazing art student who doesn't like Krita because she is used to using SAI and there are a couple things she can't do with Krita. She gave me a comparison, and I'm pretty sure all of the things she wants could be done in Krita, but I'm not skilled enough to figure it out. I would really appreciate any assistance!

Here's the sheet she gave me, which I will explain below.

Image

Here's a full resolution link for better inspection.

Brush strokes:

1. She can't find a brush in Krita that works like her favorite brush in SAI. This should be easy to create (or find a preset online) but I'm not familiar enough with the brish engines yet.
2. also, the brushes in Krita when they get really small become speckled instead of staying smooth, vs SAI on the right.

Airbrush:

3. This should be easy, but she wants a more gradual gradient/drop off like on the right.

Blending:

4. Going for the effect on the right, Krita gives the blotchy stuff on the left. I'll check what brush she was using.

Any assistance on any of these would be awesome!

We improved brushes a lot in 2.9. Amongst others we have really nice anti-aliasing(the lines smooth option), and improved blending. However, it could be that smudging also just looks better in a linear colourspace. (We have icc profiles that tell you they are linear, thpugh you might need to go 16bit floats for that. Heavier, but more precise).

For the airbrush, check out the soft-brush mask and fiddle with the curve.

You might want to check out the development version with her.

There's not many brsuhpacks for 2.9 yet though. The only one up till now is this one:https://www.dropbox.com/s/4nj8t4538f5wx2s/Wolthera_Inking_Pack.bundle?dl=0
You can import that one via settings->resource manager->import bundle(and make sure to set the filter to *.bundle).

My version of the same image in 2.9

1. The brushes indeed require the new smoothing. All the brushes I use, I put in that inking pack, so if you succeed in importing them, it should be fine. For lower than 1.0 values, you need to use shift+drag or right-click the bar and make it smaller.
2. Airbush... I tried out several things, like different softness curve and spacing.
3. Blending, well, the example speaks for itself. But, I don't recall blending being this bad in 2.8 at all. She must've done something strange. I didn't need to switch to a linear space, thankfully, still sRGB built-in.
4. Well, I am hardly an apprentice of the shoujo-style, but I can make an attempt.

Thank you for the responses!

Is there an ETA for 2.9? It's a lot of work to get my IT guys to package and push a new version of software =P

We're now aiming for early February, but I fell ill earlier this week so haven't managed to do a lot of work :-(
