How do I fill a Vector shape?

I created a number of paths/shapes using the Bezier tool and now I need to fill them with flat colors. I'm stumped. What do I do?

Select the shape with the "Shape handline" tool. Then in the tool options you can select a fill.

I totally missed that :< . I kept trying to do something with the Fill bucket.
