Hi, I am a new krita user and just installed the program on my laptop.
The program starts up fine, but crashes shortly after an attempt to create a new document at any custom settings. Restarting my computer and reinstalling the program didn't solve the problem. Could it be that my laptop isn't incompatible? Here's the specs: CPU: Intel i7 4720HQ processor Graphics Card: NVIDIA Geforce GTX970M 3GB GDDR5 Graphics RAM: 8GB DDR3L 1600MHz Krita was installed on my SSD. Any help is appreciated. Looking forward to try out this program! ![]() |

For some reason we've been having this issue that people on windows get crashes with 2.9.4, and to fix it they need to delete the krita folder in %APPDATA% (Or rename it).
Krita should work afterwards. |

I'm experiencing an odd crash that has rendered Krita useless on my system:
Gateway DX4813-01e Windows 7, SP, 64bit Intel Core i3, 530 @ 2.93GHz 6Gb RAM Intel HD Graphics I installed 64bit version: "krita_x64_2.9.4.7.msi" I've had the software running for a little over a week. No problems. Today I worked on a test project in an attempt to practice using some of the advanced layer features of Krita. I had been working on my project for about 4 hours today. During my last session I opened a .jpg file of watercolor paper. I successfully copied and pasted the watercolor paper image into my project as a new layer. I set the layer to "overlay" with the result as expected. I then decided to experiment with another image. It loaded into Krita but this time when I tried to copy and paste the image Krita became unstable. My project re-sized and located itself into the upper l left corner of the work space. When I say relocated, only the lower right corner and some of the right side of my project was showing. My attempts to enlarge the image to 100% failed. My attempts to center my project in the work space, using the right and bottom sliders, failed. Scrolling the middle mouse button to resize my project to 100% failed. I could see the percentage numbers move up as I scrolled the mouse button but my project would snap itself back to 25% zoom as soon as I stopped scrolling the mouse button. Here's the worst part. Any attempt to open the project I was working on or any other saved projects, crashes the program back to desktop. Any attempt to open a new project also results in a crash back to desk top. I uninstalled the software and shutdown my PC. I then reinstalled Krita. Still the same results. I can't open files and I can't start new projects. It crashes me back to my desktop. I also searched for the %APPDATA% in my Krita directory, as recommended in this thread. I deleted the entire directory, started up Krita, but still the same results. I then deleted the files in %APPDATA% but still the same results. Presently Krita opens and runs but any attempt to load saved projects or to start new projects results in a crash to desktop. Question: Is there something in the registry I need to change and/or delete? Did I delete the right %APPDATA% folder? This is unfortunate as I was making headway into learning/using Krita and now I'm completely dead in the water. Any suggestions are welcome. Chuck |

Update:
I got Krita to open my saved files and new projects. Here's what I did. I don't have a clue as to why it worked. * Once again I deleted Krita but this time I did NOT reboot PC. * I opened RegEdit and deleted ALL entries that had the word Krita in it. * I opened Windows Explorer and deleted any remaining folders that were Krita related. * I reinstalled Krita 64 After install I opened the program. Krita now opens the project I was working when it originally crashed. It will also open a new project without crashing. Question: If the crash is related to .jpg files, should I only use .png files for pasting into layers on my projects? Chuck |

No, the crash has nothing to do with jpg files. And the only thing you need have deleted it %APPPDATA%\Roaming\krita\share\config\kritarc: that will have contained a config entry that gave problems. The thing is, over the past two weeks we've had a dozen reports of people who needed to remove their config file, and we don't know why. I need to see one of those config files because on my Windows test machines, even after a whole transatlantic flight drawing and sketching, I didn't get any crashes! Not even when switching between half a dozen 2.9.x builds.

I've a wild guess about the crashes. It may be a coincidence but around two weeks ago Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users were notified, via icon on their task bar, that they can preorder Windows 10. The full Windows 10 OS is supposed to be available on 7/29. Like many others I clicked on the icon on my task bar and went through the process to "preorder" my free Windows 10 OS software. I experienced my crash some time after my preorder event.
Here's the interesting part. During the preorder process I was informed MS would make incremental changes to my system to prepare my PC to accept the eventual installation of Windows 10. It's the only thing I can think of that's happened in the last two weeks where so many people might be affected all at once. Question: Is it possible that the changes being made to my PC to accept Windows 10 might have an impact on Krita in some way? Outside of the changes going on with Windows users I've no idea as to why so many might be affected all at once. Good luck. Chuck |

Yes, it is possible -- after all, Windows updates broke Krita's pressure pen support on my Surface Pro, but I haven't seen this problem on my SP3 yet, and I did get that Win 10 update screen.
