Krita version alternatives

Thu Jul 16, 2015 6:58 pm
Hello everyone! It's been a long while since I last posted here, Krita was going pretty well, fortunately, but today I ran across a serious problem with Krita 2+git20150709+r21-58~ubuntu14.04.1 from the dimula 73 repository, I already submitted a backtrace in this bug since seemingly is the same issue: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350254 .
Since I didn't have this crash issue a week ago I decided to temporarily switch to an earlier version, the problem was that seemingly there are no older packages listed in the said repository, so I installed 2.8.5 from the kubuntu backports repo, sadly now I'm experiencing another problem: I can open and save files with no problems at all, but once I open the file the canvas becomes unresponsive after 3 - 5 minutes, it doesn't matter if I move layers, paint on the canvas or try to transform anything, running from the terminal doesn't give any details on the problem, so, while these issues are investigated, I'd like to know if there's a place to download Krita 2.9.4 or 2.9.5, cause I didn't experience any serious problems with any of them.

The bug you pointed out has been fixed. We usually try to keep krita 2.9 stable and krita-testing as the unstable one, but that can't prevent bugs from crawling in. Considering the bug is fixed I'll ask Dmitry if he can update lime.

EDIT: he's updated Krita-testing, you should check it in a few hours. Krita-2.9 is still the same because there's a bunch of other sensitive areas that need testing first. (mostly image->trim to layer and other canvas resize operations)

Oh! good to know it's fixed! I don't use windows very often, but do you know if windows version has this little problem too? Also, just to be sure, then the new stable version from Krita lime is 2.9 and Krita testing is the unstable one, right?

krita-testing is typically the unstable one, but right now it's the only one where your bug is fixed, it may have other bugs as well.

Windows builds still have the bug, but windows users can find older versions on files.kde.org. We don't have an automated build process, and only one guy who handles all the windows and mac builds because of said semi-manual build process. We want to get it more automated, but the issue is lack of man-power in this area.

I see, I'll keep that in mind, fortunately I don't need to do anything too complex. I also understand the man power in the Krita team right now is limited an focused on other issues, you all do a great job nevertheless. Thanks for the information!

Wasn't the bug fixed in 2.9.6?

The post in Krita's website quotes a crash issue when saving a pattern to a .kra file, are that bug and this one related?

Okay, I performed some tests with the "normal" 2.9.6 and it has the bug, as you stated, regardless of the color space or profile, saving in.kra leads to a crash. I switched to the Krita-testing package and I can open and save files without problem, but after some strokes the program freezes; however, I'm beginning to suspect that -bug aside- I created a corrupted file, cause I tried opening other files, not copies of this one but completely different ones, and the problem doesn't occur. I also tried to open the said file and re-save it as .psd in order to open it in other PC, but that causes a crash, I haven't submitted another bug report cause I want to see if it's a problem with the file itself. As I'm writing this message I'm about to install 2.9.5 in my windows partition and try to open and save the file in psd, i'll report my results.

Zut... I completely missed that! So I should have made new Windows builds? I can make x64 builds on the SP3, but not x86 builds :-(

Okay, I managed to make 2.9.6.3 Windows builds this morning before boarding the train to Paris.

Okie, I checked and I could open and rework the file in 2.9.5, I just re-saved to .psd and then opened it in krita and generated a new .kra, I'm yet to check now back in kubuntu if the issue with the file is till happening.

It's good to know! hmmm, perhaps it would be adviceable to make an announcement in the next days in Krita's website, or in the twitter/facebook accounts, maybe not many are experiencing the issue -or aren't reporting it if they do- , but it would be good to have some info for those who just found out about the software and want to try it. Good luck in Paris!
