Anyone want to share how and when they use the specific Krita selection tools and in what combinations? Ever since the selection paint tool (or whatever it was called) went away I've been looking for similarly quick ways to achieve the same results but without success. I really wanted to take advantage of the Global Display Mask but since it's not realtime (it updates only at the end of the stroke) it hasn't been as useful as I had hoped. The new shortcut keys have made a big difference in adding and subtracting to the mask but I still feel like I'm missing some tricks to improve speed and accuracy.
So...anyone got a selection workflow(s) they'd like to share with the community? |

Well I really only use the freehand selection tool and modifiers to get things done. It's fast enough for my needs although not necessarily too precise. I only ever use it to lay down big blobs of color though. What do you use the selection tool for? It might be easier to tailor your workflow to your needs than the other way around

Typically it's been pulling selections out of line art and laying in color but recently I've had the need to cut out a number of images. I tried using the Bezier Selection tool for that but there is something about it that works differently than I expected and can't get used to so I'm using the Polygonal tool for now.

You can also always paint a mask/paint on a layer, right click on it and choose the Select Opaque option to create a selection. I temporarily assigned this to the Ctrl D key combination and use it from time to time.
Apart from that, I mainly use the freehand/lasso selection tool and color selector from time to time (handy to quickly tweak colors with the Hue/Saturation filter). Those are pretty straightforward. Ah, and I haven't used it much so far, but I like the bezier tool to lay in surfaces: you can both click to create corner points, and add rounded bits wherever you need. Really useful for architectural concept art/thumbnailing! I'd like to add 2 shortcuts that people tend to overlook with selections: when using the polygonal or bezier tool, you can press Enter to close the selection from the last point you placed on the canvas. And you can use Escape to cancel any selection in the making. |

Thanks for the replies. I'm also trying to figure out how this https://krita.org/item/how-to-select-areas-with-the-paintbrush-in-krita-2-9/ might fit in as well. Krita has so many ways to do things it's sometimes hard to find all of them and then choose the the best for you
