Backgrounds

Fri Sep 18, 2015 7:05 pm
Hey, all
I know Krita can do this but I haven't figured out how. The other art program I use, Artrage, uses canvas type backgrounds, I've included an example...

But I just can't get it to work. I tried layer styles/ textures but it didn't seem to do anything. If someone could tell me how to do this I'd be grateful.

I had posted to the wrong thread, so here it is my reply again, sorry!

Personally, I would put the jpg image above, inside the folder named "Patterns" (it's within the Krita prefs folder).
Then, after rebooting, I would fill the canvas by going in: "Edit> Fill with Pattern".

This one I haven't figured out yet. I had another post about backing up tags. I figured that one out.
This one though I haven't worked out yet. I put several jpgs and pngs in my patterns folder. They show up and they all work, but when I paint over them on the layer above them regardless of what blending mode I use they just don't look like the real thing.

This is what I'm looking for

hello mperryman

To achieve similar effect in Krita i would add pattern to the brush in the brush editor with relevant settings.
Then i'll add a fill layer above the rest of the artwork and change its layer blend mode to something like overlay or grain merge

they layer stack will be something like this

- fill layer with texture in overlay , multiply or grain merge mode
- artwork layer , the brush should have the same texture pattern , change it in the brush editor, this is to make it respond to the texture above.

i am going to try it out later and repost my results here, let me know if that helps you

thank you

P.S. don't make a pattern with large image it may have impact on krita's startup time, make small seamless paterns

Hello, sorry for the confusion in my first post.

Just an attempt:

1. Create a new Group layer and set its Opacity at will and activate its Pass-through Mode (far right icon)
2. Within the newly created Group layer, create 2 new "Fill" layers, both filled with the same pattern tile.
3. Change the blending mode of one fill layer to "Subtract", and add to it also the Filter mask: "Edge Detection > Top Edge Detection"
4. Change the blending mode of the other one to "Linear Dodge", and add to it also the Filter mask: "Edge Detection > Bottom Edge Detection"
5. Put the artwork below the Group.

I've been doing that, with mostly good results. I'd like to make templates that I could load as needed, but then I could probably do that by setting the pattern, and brush attributes and save it as a template.

I fooled around with that method last night. I think that's the best way to do it so far. Thanks.

I don't mind a complex way of doing something if it works.
