Local selection masks

Krita 4.12.0
Win 8.1

Cant see how to edit them. With the selection expanded in the layer manager, clicking it and painting in white or black to edit the selection does nothing. Just trying to make a mask. Any help appreciated.

Its sort of working, but I can only add to the selection no matter if I paint with white or black.
