Reset Krita?

Mon Nov 02, 2015 7:28 pm
Hi there,

Total newbie here, and I'm alternating between studying the manual and getting to know Krita on my own. And I've messed up some settings that I don't know how to correct (I wouldn't even know how to begin to describe them so I'll spare you the effort), and all I want is to reset Krita to how it was when I first downloaded it. I tried all "default" settings I could find which didn't do much, and I've uninstalled and reinstalled Krita in as many ways as I can think of, deleting %APPDATA%\krita\share\apps\krita and restarting my laptop before re-installing, but somehow Krita manages to pluck everything I've done from the air and re-install it, warts and all. Also, Krita doesn't show up in Revo Uninstaller, so there's probably lots of places Krita has stashed away my mistakes that the microsoft software uninstaller doesn't take care of, and I don't know how to uninstall everything manually.

I'm really impressed with the possibilities, most of which I'm sure I don't even grasp yet, but I just want a fresh start...

Can someone please enlighten me as to how I can completely reset to default and/or completely remove Krita so that I can install with just its default settings?

Many thanks in advance!

Did you install krita through steam? Removing AppData\Roaming\krita should do a total reset, unless you use Krita through steam, where Krita shares your settings among all your steam systems. Deinstalling and reinstalling won't make any difference, Krita doesn't put stuff in the registry. I don't know about Revo uninstaller, but there is no place where Krita saves settings except for AppData\Roaming\Krita (and temp files in your temp directory).

Ooooh, forgot the temp directory, so my heart skipped a beat and off I went, deleting the temporary directory as well. Uninstalled Krita, re-installed it, but unfortunately all the old settings and the few drawings I saved are still there. I didn't install Krita through stream btw, so in theory this should have worked. Thanks so far, is there anything else I can do?

Maybe on your system the kritarc is saved in Local or LocalRoaming. Do a disk-wide search for a file called "kritarc". After cleaning up, there should only one be left in Program Files/krita or Program Files (x86)/krita.

No cigar, unfortunately. "kritarc" was found nowhere on my laptop but still after reinstalling, the old settings persist. Jeep owners would shrug at this stage and mutter "It's a Jeep thing".

No, there's a lot of things on windows that we can say of 'it's a windows thing', but the configuration isn't one of them. Check your hidden files as well.

Or go to settings->manage resources->open resource folder. Then the kritarc file should be in a config folder a level above the resource folder.

I think it would be nice if there's an option to delete the files on the GUI because the current procedure requires the knowledge of setting files and making hidden files visible can be risky.

There is " Hold CTRL+ALT+SHIFT when starting Krita to reset all settings" function actually... (if you hold CTRL+ALT+SHIFT when starting Krita, Krita asks you if you want to reset all settings)
Probably this needs to be in FAQ and somewhere in the user manual.

Well now. I have to agree with narnito111, because even though I usually can find my way after googling my little heart out, my Windows settings don't show a "manage resources" options and if I get there by typing resmon in the run dialog, I can't find the level above the resource folder. So then I did the "CTRL+ALT+SHIFT" trick while starting Krita, twice, ... I'm starting to feel like a failure here. Doesn't work. :'(

EDIT: Success! TheraHedwig's first tip helped. After figuring out how to display hidden files I did another "kritarc" search, deleted %APPDATA%\krita\share\apps\krita, and then uninstalled and re-installed Krita. And voilà: a fresh start. I'm so relieved. It was quite a learning process as well, so thank you all for your suggestions. I'm happy to be able to close the topic as solved!
