Is there any way to create a shortcut for "remove layer"? I recall seeing the option in previous versions (maybe I'm wrong?), but can't find it in latest version.

I think there was no shortcut for removing the layer, The "delete" clears the content of the layer

Dmitry has added shift + delete as default shortcut for removing layer you can see the commit here
