Krita eraser issues and sugestions

Wed Jan 13, 2016 8:32 pm
Hello. Im using Krita for drawing and painting about 1 year. But ther is a big problem for me with very bad eraser tool. This tool using same Edit Brush Setting and thats mean if i even tempoary lock tool on request size i cant change style for example for airbrush erase style. There is chance to make erase tool as a separate tool with separate options size, opacity and pressure sensitivity erasing? Actualy settings for eraser is very annoing when i need switch meny times size brush/eraser even i tempoary lock properties this tools.

I second this - it is uncomfortable to switch between main brush and eraser, if they are from the same preset, but have different opacity/size.

This can be somehow solved and workarounded if you copy preset you want to use as eraser, and edit it to set painting mode to eraser.

But there will be other problem - I don't know how to set shortcut for brush. Only two last brushes can be switched with '/'

And one more subtle problem with eraser - when 'Ctrl+Z' and 'E' hotkeys are used a lot, sometimes it mixes to Ctrl+E, which quietly merge layers (even to locked ones), and if it was unnoticed (in most of cases so) - further work will be lost.

There is a lot of back and forth between what the eraser tool should do. Some people want it as a separate tool, and other people have strong opinions to leave it as-is. You are right that eraser tool is not currently good if you frequently need a different eraser brush than a painting brush. Other people really like that they are shared so the erasing brush feels like the painting brush. You don't have to worry about picking an eraser brush.

People are wanting the eraser to be more powerful though with requests like yours. The current implementation is a bit brittle for trying to add functionality like that. Separating the eraser will need a lot of discussion as it will break functionality. For example. Every drawing tool has the option to quickly switch to erasing. You can select the gradient tool and switch to eraser mode. You will now erase using gradients.

Simply selecting a brush will come at a cost of breaking that type of functionality. I think people are looking for a solution that will make it more powerful without having to sacrifice some of the current behavior. That seems to be why it hasn't changed yet.

Yes, this is true.

So, is it possible to use fast switch between two fixed sizes, when eraser and brush are from the same brush preset?

Seems, this option is exactly handles this use case:

But doesn't handle cases when 'eraser' is switched off by 'D' (background&foreground=black&white) shortcut or with manually changed blending mode
