Krita not opening on Mac OS X

Mon May 09, 2016 3:42 pm
Hi there! I downloaded the Krita 3.0 beta thinking I'd check it out before contributing to the latest KS... but had issues.

I double-click on Krita's icon and get a message that Krita can't be opened because it's "from an unidentified developer." Okay, had that issue for a few small software companies. I go to system prefs --> Security & Privacy, click on the lock to make changes, enter in my admin password and then (finally!) click on the "open anyway" button.

Usually that works. Not with Krita. So then under "Allow apps downloaded from:" area I click on the radio button "Anywhere."

Try Krita again. Nope. Same error.

I can deal with the Open GL snafu, the fact that the Mac OS version won't get much attention till 3.1. But what's up with this unidentified developer stuff?

I really want to try out and use Krita, but I just feel that as a Mac user, that door is closed.

Any suggestions, or should I just forget about using Krita?

Which version of OSX are you using? I build on El Capitan and test on Mavericks, which should mean that Yosemite should also work. Do you actually get a message that Krita is still blocked, or just nothing at all?

As for the unidentified developer thing: we simply haven't got the budget yet to pay Apple for the privilege of becoming an "identified" developer. We've got the same problem on Windows, too, where we don't have the certificates to sign the application. Krita is not just a "small" developer, we're extremely tiny, with one and a half full-time developer, a budget that's less than 50,000 euros a year and for the rest a lot of volunteer enthousiasm.

Okay, got it to load up. What I had to do:

In Privacy& security, log in using admin password. Change to "anywhere" and then (very important) close the system prefs. Then started up Krita beta 3.0. Clicked okay when asked about opening an app downloaded from internet. Krita started up just fine. Then I quit Krita. Went back into system prefs and restored security settings back to where I had 'em (it was from app store and identified devs). Closed the security pane and quit system prefs. Now Krita beta starts up okay.

A bit involved, but it works.

About the dev. ID thing, yeah, it sucks. Seems that Apple and Microsoft should have something in place for Opensource devs (esp. Apple, who uses a lot of Open Source stuff, iirc).

Aside: while it's nice that there's a new KS campaign going on, I kinda question the timing, as I've not really seen anything on the Mac side that shows any improvement over the past year or so. And I have apps already that does the comic art/lettering job(s) well and until the OpenGL issues are resolved and there's a golden release of v3, I have very little to inspire me to learn yet another app. For me, it's an issue of using paid apps that I've been using for years and works great on Mac OS X versus a (to me) new app with a learning curve that has features still to be implemented. I'd be more inclined to contribute to a KS, if there was already a proven 3.x version that shows the results from the previous KS campaign. As it is now, it looks like v3 will be out after the latest KS concludes.

We actually have a google summer of code student who is going to be working on the OSX stuff. It's very dedicated openGL work, and this guy has proven before that he really is a specialist in openGL, so we have faith in him.

At the same time, QT5 port and other maintainance things are not things we think is nice for people to fund. That doesn't mean they won't happen, or do not have to happen. The QT5 port was absolutely necessary from a technological point of view, but it's also the cause of the majority of bugs. We want to get 3.0 polished enough, and we felt there's plenty of betas to show that we didn't sit still since last year.(Hence why said beta's are on the kickstarter page). We just want to polish it further.

The Kickstarter had to happen in may because we have been planning for it to happen in May, and it could not be delayed due to organisational constraints.

You are of course, free not to fund it for any reason you'd come up with, because this is of course, your money. We will not hold it against you. But we very carefully considered our kickstarter and release plan, and this was the best way to do it as far as we can tell.

Anyway, thanks for getting back to us about the permission stuff. Then we'll know what's up in the future :)

The 3.0 release should be done while the kickstarter is running. But keep in mind that the features funded in the 2015 kickstarter actually were meant for 3.1 -- that is, the next version. We've already got a bunch of them available, and I'm pretty happy about that. I'm also pretty happy about 3.0 stability: we're not done yet, but it's getting really quite good.

On the OSX front, we shelled out for a Macbook Retina Pro 15"... Way overpriced hardware, with a horrible keyboard, **** screen and it runs really hot,but at least it makes it possible to build and test on OSX. So we're working on making OSX a first-class supported platform for Krita. That's despite Apple intentionally crippling their OpenGL drivers, too. Apart from that issue, which we know what to do about, and have made a plan for, there's nothing really weird about OSX anymore.

Great, I understand all the reasons and such. So I'll just wait and see how things shake out.

@boudewijn: Just for the record, I don't consider Apple computers to be overpriced. You do get what you pay for. My previous Mac lasted about 9 years with no hardware issues at all! It's still inservice (at 11 years old!) as a file server and occasional use by the spousal unit when her iPad isn't enough. The Mac before that lasted 7 years also with no issues. And my current Mac is working just fine after 2 years. The screen on this iMac is beautiful, not one dead pixel! Even though the first one had a hard-drive failure and had to be replaced. Apple treated me well (got some credit in the apple store for my trouble, btw) and I got a replacement built-to-order iMac within days. So for me, as someone who depends on using the computer for a livelihood, the "Mac surcharge" is well worth it for dependable and reliability that prevents me from losing or missing jobs/deadlines. I don't have the time, nor the inclination to go rooting about in the computer's digital and hardware to solve problems. However, I've never used a laptop, so I don't know about them.

Back on topic, if 3.1 works well, and I'm happy with how Krita works, I'll try to contribute to the next KS (after this current one). While I do appreciate the fact that programming can have unexpected bump and delays that can't be helped, I don't need to know "how the sausage is made" -- what I do need to see is a (relatively) stable version for Mac OS X that has feature parity with the Linux and Windows versions. FWIW, I am rooting for you guys. There's some great interface elements in Krita that I'd like to know better and use (not to mention figuring out how Masking works...).

To open an app that hasn't been signed by a registered Apple developer. Open the app by holding down "Control" key and clicking the app, then select "Open". The dialog about the "unidentified developer" will appear, but will also include another button "Open". Click "Open" and you will never see that prompt again for that particular app.

I have the same problem with the latest version 3.0.91 on macOS Sierra. Like he said usually those options in security & privacy solves this issue when you start something for the first time, but this is the only case I had on Sierra, Krita can not be opened on that way. What should I do?

I tried solution that @michaelrhodes proposed but this does not work for me. It still do not want to open. Please how to fix this?

It's a while past the initial query and I imagine people have found the solution on Macs; but I thought I would add my own input.
I have found two different ways to open Krita if you are having the 'unidentified publisher' window come up:

1) Change in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Select to Allow Apps to be downloaded from anywhere

OR

2) You can choose to allow the one app to be opened via right-clicking on the app and selecting open that way. (Ctrl + click)

Happy Krita-ing! ;D

Hi!

macOS Snow Leopard is no longer supported, If we could we might give it support(how many snow leopard users are left?) but we depend on Qt, and Qt only works from High Sierra and newer for now.
