So I just downloaded and installed the new version of krita, I opened it up and tried to start painting but when I did, nothing showed. The histogram showed something, so it was there, but I couldn't see it. I touched the size slider at the top and the paint suddenly appeared. I have tried reinstalling, but that doesn't help. I am using windows 7 and Intel HD 3000 graphics.

Have you tried creating a new document. By default, nothing is open in Krita, as it doesn't know if you want to continue working on something else, or create something new...

Files > New should help you get there.

Can you try disabling "Instant Preview" in the View menu?

If that helps, perhaps your graphics card drivers wants to get an update or something like that ...

em, yes I made a new document before trying to paint, and now disabling instant preview didn't do anything, I also just noticed that the circle that shows how big your brush is stops at a point on the page, as if the page is frozen. I am currently trying to update my graphics driver to see if that will help.

EDIT: Just checked for updates and I have the latest driver available...

I'm afraid that there's nothing you can do but disable opengl. It is an OpenGL driver problem that hits some Intel GPU's.
