Heya! Is there a way to have Krita open compressed Gimp XCF files? I'm used to using Gimp (since 0.9) and want to try Krita out on my Cintiq. All my Gimp files are ether XCF.GZ or XCF.BZ2 format (as XCF itself is uncompressed) and Gimp opens them natively.

Krita doesn't support XCF files, because it's an internal format of GIMP and not intended to be portable. But you can save your files in GIMP as .ora or psd which krita is able to open.

Krita can open uncompressed xcf files, up to version 2.8. Files saved with 2.9 or later cannot be opened because the library we use, xcftools, isn't being maintained, and since it's C instead of C++, hacking that code is like having a colonoscopy, which one prefers to avoid.

I'm glad it can read 2.8 uncompressed XCF's. It just can't read 2.8 compressed XCF.BZ2's.
If you're just using XCFtools to open them, then it shouldn't be a problem to fix the issues and bring it to Gimp 2.10 spec. The code is licensed as public domain, and the fork dated to 2015 exists on Github. It's C, not 4GL. It is nothing like having an endoscope up your... well, I'll let Steve Goodie explain. ![]() |

Exactly, it's C,. so I am not going to hack on it.
