Hello,
I just downloaded krita and am trying to make a new file. It opens fine, and I can select file > new, but as soon as I hit create, it slows down, and stops responding, then Windows comes up and says krita.exe has stopped responding and forces me to close it. Any help is appreciated!

Please tell us as much about your computer as you can find out. Things like:

Operating system
Processor
Graphics card
Are you on a laptop or desktop

As for the solution, try the following:

1. Go to Settings => Configure Krita => Display
2. Untick the OpenGL option and press Ok
3. Try to open a new canvas
