What version of Krita to use in convention setting?

Here's the background: I am setting up several computers with Linux and Krita as drawing stations for a convention in June. I got the first one up and found that the Krita I compiled is "4.0.0 pre-alpha". Somehow, the naming scheme does not inspire confidence in stability. I would hate to use an unstable version in a setting where this might be people's first exposure to the software.
Have people found 4.0.0 to be ready for prime time, or can someone suggest a git commit or date that would be a better choice?

On a related note, thank you for the reply about how to back up preferences. I find that after a few hours of usage by random people, the settings can get *REALLY* messed up. It will be nice to be able to come by a few times a day and reset Krita to a known state.

Thanks all,
Brian

The latest release is 3.1.3 https://krita.org/en/item/krita-3-1-3/ which is the official stable release, some distributions may have this version already on their repos, thus no need to compile there, appimages work very well too, note that they do have a hard-coded UI theme, in case this is an issue (aesthetic) with your setups. In the link there is the source code too, if wish to compile instead.

Depending on the GPU/driver, you may want to make sure the options for instant preview and stabilizer are correctly set up (and check them constantly as they are easy to switch by the user. Many people unaware of its mechanics may mistake the rendering of the stroke for a lag.

The Devs may have a better input on this though, and hopefully you can share a couple of snapshots from the event :)

By June, the master branch will be better than it is now, and it isn't bad now, but for a convention, I would concur with Quiralta and recommend using the latest stable release. By then it'll probably be 3.1.4 or 3.1.5 -- maybe even 3.1.6 :P

you can backup the kritarc file and quit krita, cp it over the old location, restart krita in order to reset its settings to a state it was at at some point. to find the kritarc, please consult the KritaFAQ page on the krita documentation wiki

Thanks all.

It was after your replies that I found the 'appimage' files. I've never seen those before. It makes this much easier. I'll have to research how they are made.

I was so used to building from the git repo, I didn't even think to look for another method. Mind you, I learned a lot from dealing with git and was able to get Krita up and running on some unusual hardware, so I certainly appreciate the tutorials on it.
