I have an image open in Krita 3.1.3 (on a Mac) and I'm trying to determine where a part of the image starts so that I can batch process some crops with ImageMagick. (It's a spritesheet.)

In most image editing tools that I've used you can generally see the x and y coordinates of the mouse/cursor in the bottom toolbar, if not by default than after selecting some tools.

Unfortunately, I've tried switching to a couple of the tools, as well as searching the online documentation, and I can't find out how to see where my mouse/cursor currently is located within the image.

Is there a preference, toolbar, or a tool to select, that would show me the x and y position of my mouse/cursor?

No, Krita doesn't have that. In the past 15 years, about half a dozen people have asked for that, and we've made two or three attempts at creating something like that, but our attempts all impacted painting performance, so we scrapped them. If someone comes up with a good implementation, well, we'd be happy to incorporate those changes, but until then, it won't happen.

Given that, and that I haven't used Krita much, do you have any recommendations on work-arounds? Vague question, but as I see the alternatives they're either switch to a different tool, or just randomly guess where to start cropping and adjust accordingly.

What about introducing this functionality but limited to specific tools only (crop, move, magic wand, etc.)? This way it won't affect the painting tools, but we can have it for selection, cropping, measuring, etc.

I agree with this feature request.

Another feature would be if the position of a selection is reported as well as it's size. No need for live live pointer position then.

If you make a vector layer at the top of the other layers, you can draw a rectangle on it with the rectangle tool. Then, using the Shape Manipulation tool, you can select it.

The Tool Options docker then shows you an 'Arrange' live view of the x,y coordinates of the selected corners (or centre) of the rectangle and you can drag these to give a required area coverage and see the coordinates in the Tool Options docker. I suggest playing with this to see what it can do.

The existing "Rulers Track Pointer" feature does opt-in cursor position tracking (and does definitely impact performance).

It displays the cursor position as an imprecise line on the ruler.

It should be possible to extend this feature to display the actual X/Y coordinates, since the cursor position tracking is already being performed.

Sounds like a good first patch
