32 bits to 16 bits

Fri May 26, 2017 5:38 pm
Hello guys,

I am an 2D/3D artist.

I work with openEXR multilayer 32 bits pictures for my 3d renderings.

I can open my openEXR file in Photoshop, but the operations available in 32 bits are really really low. I tried to convert the picture in 16 bits but colors change...

So I tried to use Krita as converter between my renderer and Photoshop.

In Krita, I already converted the profile as below

But when I try to export the file in .psd I have this error message

Here is my question, in Krita, I would like to convert my 32bits picture into a 16 bits pictures and save it as .psd or any format that would allow me to work on it in Photoshop.

How could I do that ?

thank you very much for your help .

You probably need to convert the entire image, not just your layer.

Thank you boudewijn,

I tried to convert the whole image, using Image>>convert colorimetric space (see picture below) , but it seems that it didn't work.

Ah, uhm, I am seeing floating point there, and as far as I know Photoshop doesn't support 16bit float? So PSD also doesn't support that.

Yeah, I just googled and PS doesn't support 16bit float, only 32bit float and 16bit integer (second answer).

Thank you TheraHedwig,

I converted as 16bits integer but I have a problem with the colors , especially for the blue (see image below)...

That's probably because 16bit integer cannot retain the HDR values from the render.

I recommend trying to convert the image, when it's 32bits to 32bits(this forces all layers into the 32bits colorspace), and then trying to see if you can make it communicate with photoshop by either saving as psd, or tiff, or exr. Though, the latter, I believe, PSD doesn't open right unless you are using exrpro or whatever the plugin was called.

thank you TheraHedwig ,

but as you may notice in my first post, my problem is not to open the openEXR 32 bits file in Photoshop.

The problem is to convert the 32bits into 16 bits without losing colors "look" . It seems to be difficult in Photoshop and Krita. :'(

Re: 32 bits to 16 bits  Topic is solved

The problem is that going from 32bit float to 16bit interger you lose the hdr values which are the bright and saturated colors. There's not much that can be done about that, so hence my alternative suggestions for file-formats.
