How to superimpose one shape on the shape below it

I have figured out how to create a mask what you can (example) make a circle and then only write on that circle, but I can't figure out how to take 2 shapes and superimpose the top shape onto the bottom shape.

I can do it in an ancient version of PSE, Krita has to be a million times better than PSE.
