Hello
This is a newbie question but still, it baffles me. Probably one of those basic things no one explains to you ![]() I installed Krita yesterday and it's really great. However, I cannot paint on the "alpha" transparent background. To give you an idea right now on the image below I can paint on the on the part of the image around the "cleared" center. To clear that center I used the eraser_circle brush. ![]() I have seen quite a lot of videos where people casually use the eraser_brush to clear a layer and then draw on top of it. What am I doing wrong? Thanks |

Hi savramidis,
The settings seem correct to me. Does this happen with other brushes too? Have you checked that the blending mode of the brush preset is set to "Normal" ("ALT+SHIFT+N")? |

Which tool and which brush preset are you trying to use when you attempt to paint over the clear area? I suggest that you make sure you are using the Freehand Brush Tool with something like a basic_circle brush preset selected. It sounds obvious but people can make simple (and strange) mistakes when they first start using a new application.
The screenshot you provide is limited in size and does not show all of the screen. This is a limitation of the forum of course. Can you take a full screen image and post it to Imgur or some similar image hosting service? That would help people here to notice if any of your settings or selections are wrong for what you are trying to do. Note: If you want to clear an entire layer, it's quicker and easier to delete the layer and then make a new one, using the controls in the Layers docker which you have showing on your screen. I'd recommend that you grab and drag the top of the layer docker upwards to make it bigger. Your colour selector docker is already quite big and can easily be made smaller with no problems. If you do that, you would also have more space to show the list of Brush Presets (in the tab next to the Layers. |

Hello
I did the Alt+ Shift+ N thing but didn't work. I am using Freebrush with basic_tip_default. Here is a printscreen of the whole thing. So, am I right to assume I should have been able to draw on the alpha thing in the first place? Here is a higher def of the printscreen in case it clears things up : https://ibb.co/fPuwqx ![]() |

Hey,
just toggle the locked "Preserve Alpha" checkered button on the main toolbar (right next to set eraser mode). It prevents the brush from painting over the transparent areas of the canvas. |

I did , it didn't help. Closing all the open documents and re-opening though, seems to have done the trick.
weird... |

In situations like this, there is always some setting, toggle, parameter, mode, whatever that has been set incorrectly. There are so many of them on different dockers and in different windows that it can be difficult to track down. This is why a full size and full resolution screenshot can be useful for people to look at. One day soon, you'll try to paint in a vector layer and wonder why nothing is happening.
The link you provided was to a 640 x 360 image which I'm sure wasn't what you intended. It may be a limitaion of the hosting website. You could try Imgur (which needs a sign in account) or you could use justpaste.it https://justpaste.it/1hkp1 |

I took a higher res screenshot here :https://ibb.co/fPuwqx
I had this in my previous post as well. Anything you can tell me? |

At the top, see the little icon between the opacity on the right, and the eraser and blendingmode on the left? The lock icon? That's the alpha lock. It is toggled on your krita.
The alpha lock prevents you from drawing over transparent areas. This can be useful when you just quickly want to adjust a few details, but in your case it is mostly confusing ![]() |
