Hello,
In Krita for Windows desktop, when I want to open a file (file> open) I do not seem to see the thumbnails in the file explorer It's not very practical, having to remember all the file names. Is there a way to display them? Thank you. |

One solution would be to use the Windows file explorer to open the files. That gives a thumbnail picture for .kra and other image files.
I always try (but often fail) to give my files meaningful/helpful names and organise them in a folder structure that is organised and named in a meaningful/helpful way. |

Go to settings/configure krita and enable the native file dialogs option.

Hello, I seem to have a similar problem. Recently all of my .kra files preview thumbnails were replaced by simple krita logos instead. How can I get the preview thumbnails to work again ? I have the native file dialog option already enabled, as adviced earlier in this topic.

download the shell extension again?: https://download.kde.org/stable/krita/K ... -setup.exe
-or- https://krita.org/en/download/krita-desktop/ choose Windows Shell Extension on the page |

Before I read your reply, I re-installed Krita on top of the old one and it worked. But thanks for the advice

Super helpful answer. I've been really struggling with not being able to review my Krita files in File Explorer, a BIG handicap as file names are not enough. Downloading and installing the latest version of Krita (4.30) fixed the issue, and now I can see all my artwork in miniature, not just a file icon and the Krita logo. But seriously, if I can't get a small preview of my art, in File Explorer I'm dead in the water. Thanks, Krita community!

I have followed all of the above advice and I still have no file previews. Im running Krita 5.06, and I have the shell extension installed and I have re-installed several times, no matter what I do, I still have no previews. Im finding the lack of organization to be a huge deterrent to using Krita for me, which is really disappointing because I love it otherwise

A related issue is that OneDrive does not recognize Krita files. In my case - Windows 10 - I can see all the thumbnails of my Krita files in File Explorer, as long as they are not in my OneDrive folder. Once I have .kra files in OneDrive folders, the image disappears. My workaround is to copy any image folders I want to browse visually onto an external drive, and they all show up that way. I find OneDrive so useful in terms of having everything in the cloud that I'm okay with the awkwardness, but I'm mystified why MS recognizes the files in one context, but not another.

Please complain to Microsoft: this is their bug.

I am guessing that garyf has assigned a drive letter to OneDrive. The following is for Win 7, but should be similar in Win 10. In Explorer, you should navigate to the folder, then View > icons (not small). Also, Tools > Folder Options > View. Always show icons, never thumbnails, should be unchecked.
Also, Control Panel > Default Programs. Make sure the settings are correct for Set your default programs and Associate a file type or protocol with a program. _________________________________________ Update: I searched the Internet, and found a couple of other things that might help. Disable Files on Demand (This appears relevant if the user has not assigned a drive letter to OneDrive, but it affects more than just thumbnails.) Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Performance > Settings > Show thumbnails instead of icons |

Thanks for your suggestions. I reviewed the settings you suggested, but they did not fix the OneDrive issue. I have not assigned a Drive Letter to OneDrive, it just appears in my Windows Explorer as a local file. I agree that this is a Microsoft issue and not a Krita issue. It's peculiar that .kra files appear just fine in Windows, so long as they are not in any of my OneDrive folders. And when I first started using OneDrive, they appeared as well. They stopped being recognized by OneDrive at some point a few years ago, probably after a OneDrive upgrade of some sort. I think I will try MS tech support, and see what they have to say. And if I have any luck, I will share it here. Very annoying to see just the icon, and not the thumbnail! Gary |
