I am feeling really silly.
I am trying to paint a picture in Krita 4.0 I have three layers. One is a house, the other the sky. When I paint on the sky layer it covers the house layer. How can I isolate and paint on only one layer at a time? Thanks very much. |

Don't worry, we all start at zero
![]() Think of layers as transparent sheets, (like the ones used for projectors), the first you place at the bottom, will be cover by the second you place on top, and so on, I'm understanding that your sky layer is on "top" of your house layer?, if so anything you draw on it will cover the bottom, ideally, you want to have background/s at the bottom and subjects at the top. That's just a basic set up, as you get more comfortable painting with Krita, you will be able to manipulate layers in different ways. e.g.
sky layer base layer (called layer1 in Krita) Recommended read : https://docs.krita.org/Introduction_to_Layers_and_Masks

Thank you so much for your response and help. I opened a new krita 4.0 drawing, followed your advice and it worked perfectly. I am able to draw on each layer and not have it effect more than that one layer and I can stack them as needed. Oddly I went back to the drawing that I was having trouble with and somehow it was allowing paint to be applied to two layers. Most likely operator error or maybe ghosts in the machine!
