I could do this with the old version. But now, when I click a preset and try to change the brush engine, the settings don't change. Let's say I try to make a deform brush, must I click on a deform brush preset first? Any way around this? Thanks

It's in the preset chooser, the + icon.

Hi there. Thanks for the reply. I've already reached this step. My issue was that the settings don't change. For example, the deform engine has no option to change from let's say "counterclockwise" to "grow". It'll be stuck at the bristle engine or some other engine.

Try as follows:
Press F5 to open the brush editing engine. It doesn't matter which brush is already selected.
Toggle the presets subwindow so it shows on the left and then click the '+' icon at the lower left. Then click the Deform option, then click Save New Brush Preset and save as a sensible name.
That new named brush will be saved as a Deform brush and you can then select it for editing and the characteristic parameters of a deform brush will be presented.

The issue seems to be that the editing engine will show the characteristics of the selected brush, but a brush can't be selected and shown until it exists and it won't exist until you Save it.

There was a recent patch that fixed that... It must not have been backported to Krita 4.0.1

It should work in the Krita nightly build though if you really need it. The settings should change when you create a brush 'from scratch'

Thanks for the suggestions. Neither solutions worked for me unfortunately. Another issue I've discovered is that no matter how I change the brush preset tags, they will always revert to the defaults. I've deleted every single tag and resource as a test and sure enough, they all return when I close Krita and open it again. This is starting to become depressing to work with. Both 4.0.1 and 4.0.0 have these issues for me. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. Is this the issue?

I'd be very surprised if Windows 7 64-bit had any influence on Krita that could give you these problems but only a developer could answer that question.

As scottpetrovic said, the latest nightly builds have fixed the issue with the brush editor creating new presets.

You can get this from: https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Krit ... ows_Build/

I suggest that you download the .zip version and run it as a standalone/portable application.

If you try to make changes to resources in the Krita default bundles, it can get very confusing and I've noticed tag changes being reverted after a restart. The default resources are stored within the Krita installation and not in your user application area, which may be why this happens. However, if you edit a default resource brush preset and do Overwrite, it seems to store it as a new item with tags stripped out.

One way to get around this would be to use the brush editor and Save as a newly named preset that you can then edit and make change as you like. This would be tedious if you want a large collection of custom presets.

Another way would be to use the resources manager to make a new bundle as a pick'n'mix selection of items from existing bundles. Then you could make changes to these and Overwrite the items that you change. This way, you have to manually choose the ones you want when you first make the bundle.

Or, you could download and import the most recent deevad bundle and make Overwrite change to that. The Krita default resources contain many of the older deevad brush presets that have been updated by David Revoy.

There are ways around most problems. You have to decide how much work you want to do to customise Krita as you want it to be.

Hello,

I've also had multiple issues with creating brushes, managing tags and dealing with bundles. I would wait a little while until the issues are resolved. I've created my brushes multiple times and after a few restarts the tags were wrong and some of the brushes had been reset to default values. Brushes are randomly removed from newly created bundels and I can't save any brush forms in bundles either. I've filed some of the bugs and they will hopefully be fixed at some point. When they are, I might give it another try.

Here's a screen cast of the tag issue on my PC ... http://www.andreasresch.at/upload/Krita_Screencast_01.zip

Have fun,
Andreas

The tags are completely broken at the moment and it will not be resolved until we can have a resource system rewrite(which should happen this year).

Thanks for the info. I will check back on Krita later this year then.

Cheers,
Andreas
