Animated brush?

Sun Jun 03, 2018 8:57 am
I've been trying to get the 'loaded' or 'dual tip' brush effect for some time. (Actually... it sounds like the feature itself exists but I'm just not using it correctly.) I want to replicate this brush: https://tamarinfrog.deviantart.com/art/Splatoon-Brush-541152954, and I really have no more information to add since it's described as being as easy as 'adding the triangle as a dual brush' (in here, at about the middle of the image: https://orig00.deviantart.net/7c49/f/2015/167/8/2/splatoon_style_tutorial_by_tamarinfrog-d8wqzmb.jpg). Any help, including speculation, pointers to resource and resource for using the effect on other programs like GIMP, are appreciated!

In Edit3: of the original link, it's noted that someone has made a GIMP version of the Splatoon(sploon) brush:

https://tikitiel.deviantart.com/art/Spl ... -582196714

I've downloaded this and installed it in GIMP with no problem. The bush is a .gih (GIMP Image Hose) file that is compatible with Krita and it works fine in Krita (it's file name is 'Sploon' but the internal name is 'Splatoon'). The GIMP pack also contains the Sploon Dynamics (.gdyn) and Sploon Preset (.gtp) files which work fine in GIMP. The combination of the .gydn and .gtp in GIMP is more or less a technical equivalent of the Krita Brush Preset (.kpp) file in terms of the parameters that are influenced. If you edit the Sploon dynamics settings in GIMP, you'll see that Opacity, Size, Spacing and Jitter have variation with stylus pressure with associated transfer curves, jitter reducing with pressure.

If you use this .gih brush file in Krita, you'll have to create your own brush preset settings. the easiest way to do this is to Edit a simple brush preset like Basic-2_Opacity and add characteristics to it in accordance with the GIMP characteristics. The problem here seems to be the 'Jitter' property which, as far as I can tell, has no direct equivalent in Krita. Scatter and Rate variation with pressure and Fuzzy Dab make a rough approximation but I can't get it looking like the GIMP version (keep Scatter at a lowish value). I suggest that you play with it to see what you can do with other properties and their parameters. Good luck with that.

As for the triangle brush, I don't know about 'loaded' or 'dual tip' brushes but someone else might.

tikitiel doesn't seem to have included the triangle brush in the GIMP resources but you get a good idea of its appearance from the tutorial images so you should be able to create your own as a .png file which would then be placed in the Krita brushes folder and then be available in Krita after it starts. Good luck with doing something with it after that.
