Onionskins are on. Why can't I see them

I'm doing frame-by frame animation in Krita. I have all the necessary dockers chosen--animation, onionskin and timeline. I have set up a layer in my timeline for frame-by-frame. I have turned on onionskins, but can't get them to actually appear in the workspace. I have fiddled with the bars in the onionskin docker, but nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong or forgetting to do?

The 'sliced onion' icon brings up the onion skin control/settings sliders. This determines the number and properties of the onion skins. After adjustments, it can be turned off.

The Layer 'n' box to the left of the timeline has various icons in it. The rightmost is the 'lightbulb' icon that turns on the imaginary light under the animation frames and lets you see the onion skins. Are you sure that you clicked this so it has little 'illumination' lines coming out of it?
