Text question?

Mon Jul 09, 2018 2:28 pm
I have the latest version of Krita.
I want to use it for Music video still frames.
This involves using text.
The text tool in Krita is very poor!
Will this be improved soon?
I request a better Text Editor.
Also an ability to stroke text (outline, edge)
Until these are available Krita remains on my not to be used seriously yet List.
Thanks

I think the Devs know the issues.
Because a lot of people ask about it.
They're improving it.

Btw, which part of text tool is poor to use ? and How ?
So devs may see this and maybe consider that in future

The entire edit window, has a lot of mistakes change the font size the text becomes one line.
No ability to stroke text (outline, edge)
Drag to resize not working with edit shape.
Other things I can't think of right now. (Not on Krita)

Krita was developed as a painting and image manipulation application, for which it is very good. The vector tools and text especially have recently had an update and text is better that it used to be. It has been said by the developers that it is still something to be worked on and improved.

I can change the font size of a text block without loosing line breaks, using both the text creation window and the Edit Text window. I'm using the Linux appimage so this needs confirmation from someone who, like you, is using the OSX version and then maybe a bug report.

Further to my pevious reply to another post on the subject of text outlining, viewtopic.php?f=139&t=153132 :-
I spent a bit of time playing with krita and thinking sideways before coming up with the following:

If you want fancy stuff then you have to convert it to a vector path, after which you can't edit it as text anymore. So, if you're happy with the correctness of your text you can use the Edit Shapes Tool to convert to path. Then you can use the Select Shapes Tool to select the entire text block and change the Line and Fill properties. You can also resize the text block (it's not actually text anymore, it's a set of vector shapes that look like text). Using the Edit Shapes Tool and dragging out a selection area, you can then move, resize, etc individual words.

If you want to do serious and detailed work with lots of fancy text then Inkscape is a good and free application. You can export your final result as a .png file and then add it as a layer to krita or whatever you're working with. Exporting as a .svg file and importing into krita can have problems due to .svg standard adherence and compatibility and other technical stuff.

For problems with krita you can report them here to get confirmation and/or feedback and you can submit a formal bug report as an 'error' class or a 'wishlist' class. Don't hold your breath for wishlist items.

Thank you very much for taking the time and going to the trouble of answering in nice detail.
I do appreciate it.
I don't have the extra time to go thru the process, so I will continue to use paid software that I have that does this in the software quickly and easily.
I will continue to use Krita for other things.
(The normal filter is fantastic) and look forward to the advancement it will make in the future.
Again thank you for the effort you put into you posts both go them.

It was an interesting and useful learning experience for me. I've always found that investigating other people's problems is a stress/worry free process because it doesn't matter to me if I succeed or fail. :)

You have to be happy with the tools that you're using, for the UI experience, the workflow and the end result, so at the moment you need to carry on with whatever software you're used to. Keep checking for krita updates and good luck with the music video captioning.
