New Krita user - really like the program but finding that everytime I bring it up, I get different settings. For example, my pen size might be 10 when I log out but when I return it might be 100 or 600. I guess I could live iwth that, but the worst offender is the pallet tool (rightclick). Each time I start Krita, I right click and have different tools in all the categories (e.g., Sketch). I don't want it to change everytime. This behavior occurs even after I configure Krita--> restore defaults. I have no custom resources or add-ons. This is a staright 4.02 load from web.
Windows 10 Laptop Waacom tablet help for the noob would be appreciated. S |

4.0.2? That's ancient. Please update to the latest version, 4.1.1 and check whether the issue still occurs.

4.1.1 Linux appimage in use for me:
When krita starts, the initial display of brush size and selected brush preset in the brush presets docker and the brush preset history docker do not correspond to the brush preset which is active at that time. It's only when you manually select a different brush that the displayed size and the highlighted entries in those dockers become correct. I regard this as a startup 'hiccup' and tend to ignore it but it can be confusing until you get used to it. If you manually change the size of the brush preset you're using, with the toolbar slider, that change is not remembered after a krita restart. Using Edit Brush Settings, you can change the default size of the brush but this is not remembered after a krita restart unless you Overwrite the settings within the editor. Editing the brush preset settings in this way is something you should do with care, if at all, in the initial stages of using krita. The pop-up palette has a number of brush preset icons, and this number is fixed but can be changed in Settings -> Configure Krita -> General -> Miscellaneous tab (Number of Palette Presets). When the palette is displayed, if you select a tag (e.g. Sketch) that contains more presets that there are available icon spaces then it's perhaps not surprising that the display is inconsistent. Those tags refer to the Brush Preset tags that you can see on the drop down list at the top of the Brush Preset docker. The idea is that you create your own tags named 'Hoot Sketch' and 'Hoot Ink', etc that have the brush presets you want to use and you select those for display in the pop-up palette. As usual, the manual is a great resource for learning about all this, as is carefully playing around with things. https://docs.krita.org/en/ |

Downloading updated software now. Will note progress.
I have certainly been looking in the manual, but the answer to the question isn't clear. If what is stated above is correct, that overloading brush tags results in random results in pop up pallette, then why would the developers overload it with the default settings? Random output is bad for user experience. Further, I wouldn't expect random output, but rather the same brushes that are the first on the list no matter what changes I made last go round. But here's the thing, I am not making changes to the tags or labels. I am running with the "off the shelf" settings in all things. EIther way, a limitation to slot quantity should not result in random output. |

update to 4.1.1 successful, but no change to the pop up palette load. That said, Ahab got me watching closer. It does seem to load one of three or four different brush sets in a category. I have only been testing "sketch" category for now as that is the main one I use. At first, I thought it was cycling through the different 'sets' but more testing showed no immediate pattern (although I admit I started from desktop rather than taskbar a couple times. that shouldn't matter but something to consider). I'll have to build a set of use cases and document output a little bit. That will take some time, however. Thanks for the tips and I appreciate any more that come. I'll try to post up here any new test results I get.
