Hello,
I'm wondering if there is a way to toggle/switch between the polygonal selection tool and the oultine selection tool in the middle of making a selection. In other words, I'd like to be able to switch back and forth between the two tools without having to close the selection. In photoshop I can hold down the alt key while using the polygonal selection tool and it will change temporarily into the lasso tool therefore allowing me to quickly draw a selection that has both straight and organic lines. Thanks so much! ~Alex |

Hey,
The Outline Selection Tool does it, if during a freehand path you press and hold <ctrl>, the path transform into lines and you can alternate freehand path and polygonal selection with the same tool. |

When using the Cntrl key, as Deeved explained, remember to release the left mouse button after you press and hold the Cntrl key. Also, remember to press and hold the left mouse button before you release the Cntrl key when alternating between those modes. I usually get my finger coordination wrong when doing that, which is very frustrating
![]() Also, when using the selection tools, in the Tool Option docker there are icons to choose one of four actions (provided you are in Pixel Selection mode, not Vector Selection mode). These are Replace, Intersect, Add and Subract. You can use these to combine selections from different selection tools, which can be very useful for making complicated selections. |

I have a follow up question please.
When I use this technique it works like a charm, but once I close the selection I can't use the same trick again to interact with the selection. If I try to use the add, subtract, or intersect modes while using the outline tool + <ctrl> it instead it creates a new selection overriding the old selection. In other words, the outline tool will behave correctly with the command but it kills the active selection and just makes a new one. Hope this makes sense! With much appreciation ~Alex |

Yes, I can confirm that. When you release the Ctrl key, the selection you are drawing replaces any existing selections, no matter what Action you've chosen.
I don't know if this is a limitation or a bug. You could make a bug report or wait for a developer to comment. |

Thank's for confirming! I'll wait and see if any developers get a chance to check it out. I'm not sure the etiquette on marking something as 'unanswered' because the original question was answered. |

Actually, if a developer was going to comment then they would have done it by now. I suggest that you make a bug report (it's a fun process, really). Then if it's a bug it will join the queue for fixing. If it's an oversight or a design decision then you can make it a 'wishlist' item and it will join the queue of wishlist items to be considered for incorporation. Whatever it is, it feels 'wrong' so it would be good to formally report it via the bug reporting process.
